Boras talks Werth

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 3:47 PM

Read my earlier post on Werth-Boras here.

After Jayson Werth canvassed the agent community over the past month, he settled upon Scott Boras, one of the game's most powerful figures. Boras could land Werth a huge deal this off-season when he becomes a free agent, but the superagent thinks a common bond helped forge the two parties.

"I think we got along because we were both raised by farmers," Boras said by phone. "His stepfather and my father were both farmers. You go to work, get your job done, you do your thing and you keep your mouth shut."

Werth hired Boras late Sunday night. He called the agent to inform him of his decision hours after hitting a walk-off home run to beat the Washington Nationals.

"It was a real good day," Boras said.

Boras expects his client to command a significant deal on the market. The first positive about Werth's 2010 season that Boras mentioned was the fact he could play centerfield. Werth has started 18 games in center this season.

So will talks with the Phillies, who appear to be a significant long shot to re-sign Werth, begin before the season is over?

"Certainly," Boras said. "The Phillies are a very viable alternative."

Alternative?

"Whenever a player is playing well at a place, you have to look at those places closely because they're a good combination," Boras said. "It's good business for the Phillies. They've been running their business rather well. They're putting together a core, a dynasty."

Boras has had limited dealings with the Phillies since the J.D. Drew saga in 1997. He also represents current Phillies Ryan Madson and Domonic Brown -- coincidentally, the player who could replace Werth in the Phillies' lineup.

The agent said he has kept in contact with Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"In the era of Ruben, we talk about a lot of free agents," Boras said. "We interact quite a bit. Ruben and I have a very good working relationship over the years."

Werth is gone next year, Dom Brown slides into RF, and Rollins drops to the 5 hole to break up the lefties in the order. Rollins won't have as many stolen bases, but at least he'll drive in a ton of runs.

the beginning of the year was unbearable with all the werth FA stories...then they mercifully stopped when summer rolled around. just leave it alone until the season is over. it doesn't help anyone. if werth plays well, we win the WS and he leaves for a huge pay day, so be it. let us enjoy the ride that's all.

First of all -- Philly.com -- PLEASE proofread your articles before posting! Every day--every single day--there are errors. Represent yourselves as a viable news source and fix them PLEASE!

Secondly, Werth -- much as we love him, I'm not devastated about losing him. I like the idea of a fresh face and a new-guy spark in Dom Brown, who shows promise to become even more stellar than Werth. He's not a pinch hitter, after all -- I can't wait to see him out in right field next year. <3you Jayson, good luck!

    Lastly, GO PHILS!

"His stepfather and my farmer were both farmers."

This doesn't make sense. I'm sure you meant to write "His stepfather and my father were both farmers."

Werth has to go get his big payday. He hasn't had the opportunity to get the huge paycheck until now. The Phillies can't sign him nor should he take a huge discount to stay. He has earned the right to have other teams pay way too much for him.

I would hate to see Werth leave. The phils need a solid right handed hitter like Werth in the lineup who can hit the ball well and play outfield well. I think the phils should deal Victorino and make enough room to fit Werth in at center field, and Brown can take over right.

....werth wants to play in new york so that he can help the 1986 mets repeat. deal with it!

Werth has been slightly above average this year. The only people who might overpay are the Mets, but the Wilpons aren't exactly flush, so Jason and Boras might be getting ahead of themselves.

Jason's lack of plate discipline is only acceptable because he's hitting between two good hitters and so he gets more fastballs than if he was on, say, Houston.

But in any event, I wish him well in his new home.

Doesn't mean a thing. Phils are a long way from the two-bit team that Drew spurned. Ruben doesn't care, why should we? They're one of the top 4 teams in payroll now. And agree with whoever said if he helps us win the WS this year and then cashes out - so what? Offer him arbitration and take the #1s and we all go home happy. Same as when Rowand left and nobody loved that guy more than me/us.

Let Werth leave. I don't want the Phillies paying top dollar to an aging outfielder on his decline. Look at happened to Rowand and what is happening with Ibanez.

So Victorino signing an extension hurts our chances at re-signing Werth? Huh? If anything, this makes Vic more tradeable. Don't dismiss a Vic trade and Werth signing. I don't think it'll happen but it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Nothing bad to say about Jason Werth...he leaves everything he has on the field. Just hope he can clean up the few careless errors he makes.
