Booing Jimmy, Cheering Jayson

POSTED: Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 9:16 AM
Jayson Werth looks into the Phillies dugout after he homers in the eighth inning last night.

They came, some booed, they cheered when Jayson Werth homered.

That's pretty much the story from last night's 5-4 victory over the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.

Jimmy Rollins heard a mix of boos and cheers before each of his four at-bats. He heard only boos after he made outs in those at-bats, although he hit the ball hard in three of them. He flied out to the warning track in right-center field in the eighth. When the ball left the bat it looked for a second like it might have a chance to be a go-ahead home run or a double off the wall.

You could sense fans were ready to erupt with cheers, but the ball was caught.

"If they want to boo me, that's fine. Boo me," Rollins said. "Just keep it off everyone else. . . . You had some cheers, you had some boos. Like I said, when you get the win, they'll cheer you."

They cheered when Werth hit the go-ahead homer following Rollins' at-bat in the eighth. It provided a much needed victory against a terrible team the Phillies should continue to beat this week. The Phillies remain 1 1/2 games behind the Mets.

"It seems to me I hear we're out of it right now, like we're not even close," Werth said of the division race among the Mets, the Phillies, and the Florida Marlins. "But the reality is we're a game and a half back with six weeks to play," he said. "I feel we're the best team in this division. We just need to go out there and play like it."

Why are we booing? John Gonzalez explains.

*

I saw a photo of a fan holding a sign that said, "Phillies Fan 45 Years. J-Roll Fan No Longer. Trade Him."

Really? Trade him? That's how upset you are at Rollins?

Dude, come on.

*

The Phillies have won 3 of 4, but have hit just .200 in those four games. They are hitting .184 in their last seven games and .204 in August.

In the Phillies Notebook: the Phillies are interested in David Ross, Rollins tells us what players on other teams think about Phillies fans and Pedro Feliz could return action tonight.

Varsho: "Like I said, when you get the win, they'll cheer you"- if you get offended by comments like these then 100% of all athletes must offend you. Are fans not supposed to cheer for their players when their team wins? How dare he state that! Beef69- Don't worry, the sarcasm detector I sent to you in the mail should be arriving any day now.

anybody see the bio on Todd Zolecki, saying how he suffered through the packers losing to the giants in the NFC title game in January? Are we supposed to care about that? haha like we haven't had 3 years of losing an NFC championship game and than losing a superbowl? And the dude is from Milwaulkee.... just throwin that out there

JGeorge59: Welcome to the blog. It's existed for at least 2 years and most of us regulars know where Zo is from and that he is challanged when it comes to choosing football teams--now back to baseball

Check this out from mlbtraderumors.com: "The Phillies apparently offered a better package for Maddux earlier this year, but he would not approve a trade there." Just goes to show that a lot has to go your way in order to make a deal and sometimes you can't get it done no matter how much you want to.

CyHamels - it bothers me that he is basically saying "see I told you so, when we win, they cheer.." Well no S**T Sherlock!!! Every fan of every team will cheer when you win! Isn't that the way is supposed to be? And you talk about the fans battered psyche? How about the fragile psyche of players who are paid millions of dollars to play a game??? Am I supposed to coddle them and tell them that everything is going to be OK, even when they suck? If you need me to give you warm and fuzzy feelings by cheering every move you make like a 5 year old playing tee ball, then you shouldn't be getting paid $8 million dollars a year to play a game.

bski: we all knew maddox would only accept a trade to a West Coast team. The questions (and I dont agree with all of them) were about CC, Pudge, Manny etc

Back to baseball... good thinking. The most important line in Todd's post above is this one: "The Phillies have won 3 of 4, but have hit just .200 in those four games. They are hitting .184 in their last seven games and .204 in August." You won't squeak by many teams doing that. They barely got past that minor league team from DC last night. 7 hits, with Jimmy and Chase posting 0'fers. In other words, no signs of life yet from the offense. Has to change if they want to stay in the race.

I'm proud to be a Phillies fan but I'm not happy about how my team has been run. If the front office knew what they were doing or cared about winning perhaps it would be easier to be a fan, but let's face it, 28 years of futility is hard to take. I grew up in Philly and have been a fan for 45 years. Since the Carpenters sold the team to the present ownership we've had almost no success. I'm sure these owners are getting rich on this team however. How many sell outs have there been this year? About 45 out of 60? Spend some of this money on player development (scouting, minor league coaches)and perhaps the Phils will have a better chance. I doubt this management team cares about winnign however. As fans when we see the do nothing attitude of these owners all we can do is boo the players. The front office is at fault however. The players like Jimmy Rollins ought to understand all the years of frustration. It's not that we don't love you guys, we just want a winner!

More depressing stats on the O: "The heart of Philadelphia’s order - Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell - went 2-for-11 with no RBIs as their recent struggles continued. The trio is hitting a combined .156 (19-for-122) with 14 RBIs since Aug. 7." (From Yahoo MLB page.)

"They" - meaning us, the fans, support both the team and the paper that employs YOU - Mr. Zolecki! Go ahead, keep biting the hands that feed you. If "they" ever decide enough's enough, you're out of a job.

On the bright side... Brett Myers is 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA in his last four starts. I'll be down there tonight. Let's hope he can dominate this weak Nationals lineup and the Phils can produce at least 3 runs. By the way, it's Chase Utley bobblehead night. I recall they did a fan survey back in June or so to pick who got the last bobblehead night of the season. I wonder who would win that poll now? I'm thinking Brad Lidge. (They already did Jamie Moyer.)

Also - it sure seems the "best team in the division" is hitting under the Mendoza line - as a team. Perhaps the REAL STORY is the team's performance, or lack thereof, and NOT the support of the phans - as the money pit is continuously sold out. This phan is fed up with the constant criticism of the loyal phaithful who have supported this disorganization for generations. It's bizarre.

While we all complain about the owners and management, we need to remember a few things. Howard, Chase, Rollins, Ruiz, Myers, Cole, Kendrick, Pat the Bat, and Coste are all home grown players coming up through the farm system. Someone was doing something right at one point. The problem seems to be the maangement's inability or unwillingness to aquire that big name player in mid season to fill a hole that has developed. Last year they couldn't get a pitcher and this year they can't get a bat. I don't know if it's attitude, money or the fact that we fans boo, but that is the management's true failure
