Booing Jimmy, Cheering Jayson
Can we please put the whole J-Roll thing behind us?
Booing Jimmy, Cheering Jayson
Todd Zolecki
They came, some booed, they cheered when Jayson Werth homered.
That's pretty much the story from last night's 5-4 victory over the Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.
Jimmy Rollins heard a mix of boos and cheers before each of his four at-bats. He heard only boos after he made outs in those at-bats, although he hit the ball hard in three of them. He flied out to the warning track in right-center field in the eighth. When the ball left the bat it looked for a second like it might have a chance to be a go-ahead home run or a double off the wall.
You could sense fans were ready to erupt with cheers, but the ball was caught.
"If they want to boo me, that's fine. Boo me," Rollins said. "Just keep it off everyone else. . . . You had some cheers, you had some boos. Like I said, when you get the win, they'll cheer you."
They cheered when Werth hit the go-ahead homer following Rollins' at-bat in the eighth. It provided a much needed victory against a terrible team the Phillies should continue to beat this week. The Phillies remain 1 1/2 games behind the Mets.
"It seems to me I hear we're out of it right now, like we're not even close," Werth said of the division race among the Mets, the Phillies, and the Florida Marlins. "But the reality is we're a game and a half back with six weeks to play," he said. "I feel we're the best team in this division. We just need to go out there and play like it."

Why are we booing? John Gonzalez explains.
*
I saw a photo of a fan holding a sign that said, "Phillies Fan 45 Years. J-Roll Fan No Longer. Trade Him."
Really? Trade him? That's how upset you are at Rollins?
Dude, come on.
*
The Phillies have won 3 of 4, but have hit just .200 in those four games. They are hitting .184 in their last seven games and .204 in August.

In the Phillies Notebook: the Phillies are interested in David Ross, Rollins tells us what players on other teams think about Phillies fans and Pedro Feliz could return action tonight.
A sign at the park - MVP; IT WAS WHAT IT WAS and now IT IS WHAT IT IS." Bubba346
Whoever said we are falling into Rollins plan is an idiot. Rollins spoke the truth as a man. He told YOU that you aren't worth as much as a well worn jock strap. The Philadelphia Phan has successfully torn apart another team that could have had dynastic intentions. YOU are the premier reason this city is labeled as "loserville" instead of simply loveable losers. There is nothin loveable about YOU, look around next time you're at the park just a bunch of dopes that appreciate nothing other than Chase Utley and the avg season he is having. MORONS Truth
Rollins was right about being the team to beat and he's right about the vocal majority of fans that boo/curse and make offensive remarks at the very sight of a player. I've heard the rationale ...we paid our money and haven't won a WS in 28 years. Boo hoo! Who says if you drop some $$$ you get to be rude and offensive? Not to mention how totally obnoxious these fans are to the people that had the bad luck to sit near these morons. Maybe, instead of booing and cursing and otherwise expressing some out of control rage over a stupid play in a 162 game season, they could think about how their actions effect others and how badly they represent the City of Brotherly Love, and what a complete arse they are. Nah I doubt it. Just keep booing the good players out of town. Yeah that will work, you knuckle heads. A Phillie fan since 1958. Iggleman
Truth - I love how when its convenient for you, the Philly fan is everyone but YOU.. Iggleman - its definitely not a vocal majority, its a vocal minority. The problem is, the reputation this city has is mostly based on the vocal minority. The same 30 guys who call WIP over and over again, the drunker, louder people at the ballpark who make it seem like its a majority. I often sit in my seat at Phillies games, cringing at the stupid remarks made by a few of the idiots around me, and I assume most of the people sitting near me, staring at the idiots with the look of confusion on their face, feel the same way. These are the same idiots who will chant MVP for Chase Utley - in MAY - and boo any player on the field at any given time just because they think that's what they are there for. But again, its definitely a vocal minority. Gary Varsho
"I happen to agree with what Rollins said 100%." "We do seem to do it (boo, be negative) better (at least one thing we are number one in) than anyone else." But we are so willing to turn on guys in a heartbeat. The Truth pays homage to Deb in Dixie-- Truth
Enough with the Phila fans psyche! I hope this story is soon coming to a close. Let's hope Myers resurgence continues tonight. I liked Victorino batting in the middle of the line-up. It seemed to help drive in a couple of runs. (Bobby--Utley bobbleheads are probably more popular than a Lidge bobblehead. However, I'd nominate Lidge as a MVP candidate) KarenA
wonders when we're going to put Rollins' comments to bed and start talking about baseball again. Yes, BASEBALL you remember, national pastime, etc. Can we please discuss something worthwhile and not this already over exausted subject jeff gross
Vic's base running last night won them the game!! I like him at 6th too. Gives us some speed at the bottom of the order. Beef69
KarenA, I thinking I'm falling in love...Thanks for helping to get these guys back on track. I also like Vic in middle of order when Werth plays. I don't know if I'd bat Junkins second, though jeff gross
Just to stir things up a bit: How about we trade Howard, Rollins and Truth to St. Louis for Pujols,Wellemeyer and Tony La Russa? jeff gross
The only problem with that is, Truth will know where to find us. Nice thought though. Beef69
I don't believe Gary Varsho is actually from Philadelphia. He is way too rational. "The more people agree on something, the more likely it is that they are wrong." - A lesson I learned listening to Philly sports fans my whole life. RollinsWasRight
jeff gross: I would trade Howard, Rollins and Truth to St. Louis for Pujols and St. Louis's worst baseball blogger, whoever that may be. I don't think St. Louis would, however. Considering their 1B is better than Howard in every facet of the game except home run hitting, is a complete player, a difference maker, has a more impressive track record, a proven level of consistency, and by the way, is also younger than Ryan Howard, if you can believe that. RollinsWasRight
can't eblieve someone took me serriously. However, don't forget they'd be getting rollins as well. I wouldn't make teh deal without SL including La Rossa though. We need a real manager jeff gross
defg0003: Zo tells it like it is. Honest, objective, insightful baseball analysis. He is the best baseball writer in this town, likely because he is not from this town. If you want an apologist for the fans, or an enabler of their crass and vile behavior, there is plenty of it elsewhere... around here, we call those people WIP, and the Daily News. RollinsWasRight
