Amaro tight lipped at GM meetings

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro spent Tuesday in meetings with his peers and the hot topic behind closed doors was the collective bargaining agreement that expires after the 2011 season.

Nobody, however, wanted to talk about those discussions.

Amaro was similarly tight-lipped when asked about his plans to improve his own team for next season as well as negotiations with his own free agents.

Asked about trade possibilities, he said "I can tell you we've had a lot of dialogue with several other clubs about trying to address some of our needs."

Amaro would love to bolster his bullpen, especially with a left-handed pitcher, but when the subject matter narrowed to specific free agents, the Phillies' general manager said little.

Asked if he planned to speak to Jayson Werth's agent Scott Boras at these meetings, Amaro said "I may at some point. Not sure yet." He also admitted it had "been a while" since he last talked to Boras about the free-agent right fielder.

One day after re-signing Jose Contreras to a two-year extension, Amaro did not make it seem as if he's in any hurry to re-sign reliever Chad Durbin.

"That's still a possibility," Amaro said.

Where do things stand with Durbin?

"No comment," he said.

Do you want to bring Durbin back?

"No comment," he repeated.

Told that makes it seem as if he's not that interested in re-signing Durbin, Amaro said, "I don't care. That's part of the process. I can't comment on any of the free-agent guys, including my own."
