ORLANDO, Fla. -- Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro spent Tuesday in meetings with his peers and the hot topic behind closed doors was the collective bargaining agreement that expires after the 2011 season.
Nobody, however, wanted to talk about those discussions.
Amaro was similarly tight-lipped when asked about his plans to improve his own team for next season as well as negotiations with his own free agents.
Asked about trade possibilities, he said "I can tell you we've had a lot of dialogue with several other clubs about trying to address some of our needs."
Amaro would love to bolster his bullpen, especially with a left-handed pitcher, but when the subject matter narrowed to specific free agents, the Phillies' general manager said little.
Asked if he planned to speak to Jayson Werth's agent Scott Boras at these meetings, Amaro said "I may at some point. Not sure yet." He also admitted it had "been a while" since he last talked to Boras about the free-agent right fielder.
One day after re-signing Jose Contreras to a two-year extension, Amaro did not make it seem as if he's in any hurry to re-sign reliever Chad Durbin.
"That's still a possibility," Amaro said.
Where do things stand with Durbin?
"No comment," he said.
Do you want to bring Durbin back?
"No comment," he repeated.
Told that makes it seem as if he's not that interested in re-signing Durbin, Amaro said, "I don't care. That's part of the process. I can't comment on any of the free-agent guys, including my own."

The "No Comment" isn't just RAJ's personality...it has to do with the new policy agreed upon by the teams and players union not to negotiate thru the media...the fans and media will just have to have fun creating our own rumors (which we always do anyway)...by the way, did you hear about the Pujols for Howard deal??? stan the man too
Too bad Amaro kept his mouth shut during the time Werth was under contract, and before Boras became his agent. Werth wasn't going to sign after Howard was handed a $125 million only to slip to mediocrity. phineas
mainlinephan...we all enjoy the fruits of those who have gone before us (unless you were Adam)...judgement of our own actions must ultimately wait until all the fates eventually play themselves out...unless of course you are actually prescient yourself (or God)... stan the man too- Why should RAJ tip his hand?! The hot stove is as big a game of poker as any. Trust. Have faith
Seems like the national press guys just go to the players agents to get some leads. Ruben has got to do something about a lefty out of the pen because his replenished farm system has little to offer. Dull
$40 and my right nut says that RAJ got b**ched at for signing a guy like Contreras to a two year deal this early in free agency. RAJ just drove up the price for every reliever on the market. Steveo31- RAJ will improve this team. johnnyu
You guys know that RAJ always - every year - answers "No comment" on these questions? What RAJ is saying is that his negotiations with the player is confidential until it's finalized. That is very fair and reasonable. I want the same from my employer - to keep our private conversations private. ...And can we please stop on the Davey Lopes sob story?! You really think it was about money? Lopes is 65 years old and was treated for prostate cancer two years ago. Lopes lives in Los Angeles. He can work for the Dodgers and live at his own house. Money was the excuse but it wasn't the real reason. smel4727
Would you rather have a GM like Ed Stefanski? Ed talks alot with the media. You know why? Because "his" team stinks and he needs the pub. Amaro has done a very good job thus far and I am confident he will again. rwolffd12
RAJ has to do something. Phils win the NL East by 6 games. How many games is Dan Uggla worth to the Braves? (maybe 5-8). How many games will Jayson Werth's departure worth (maybe 5-10 games)? At this point, with nothing changing, the Braves are the current favorite to win the NL East. The Phillies won the NL with an amazing streak down the stretch. Gotta do something RAJ to tip the balance of power back to Philly. drhoffman- There's a Randy S. writing for the No. Penn Reporter specultating in a piece today that Phils should move Chase Utley to L. A. Dodgers for Matt Kemp -- Comments?
