Phils-Marlins postponed

POSTED: Saturday, April 16, 2011, 2:55 PM
Cole Hamels will start Sunday against the Marlins. (David Goldman/AP)

You may have noticed it's raining and the weather reports say it's supposed to continue raining through the rest of the night.

The Phillies noticed and acted accordingly, postponing Saturday's game against the Florida Marlins.

The game will be made up as part of one of those lovely day-night doubleheaders on June 15. Game 1 will begin at 1:05 p.m. and all tickets from Saturday night's postponed game will be honored at that game. The second game will go off as initially scheduled at 7:05 p.m.

From a baseball perspective, the postponement means that Cole Hamels, the scheduled pitcher for Saturday's game, will pitch the series finale Sunday against the Marlins and everybody else in the Phillies' rotation will be moved back a day.

That scenario gives Roy Oswalt an extra day to recover from the strained lower back that forced him to leave Friday night's game against the Marlins after the sixth inning. Oswalt would have been scheduled to pitch Wednesday's series finale against Milwaukee, but now is moved back to Thursday night's game in San Diego.

A Phillies spokesman said there was no update on Oswalt's condition Saturday. If Oswalt is unable to make his next start, the two most likely options are Kyle Kendrick and Vance Worley. Kendrick had a 1.80 ERA in three relief appearances covering five innings so far this season while Worley 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA at triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Why didn't Phils re-sign Chad Durbin? Bring up Vance Worley... Herndon and Byez (sp?) has to go. Put Kendrick in the rotation and trade Blanton.

How many more disatrous starts does Fat Joe get before the decision is made to replace him with KK or Worley? I'm not a huge KK fan (same kind of pitcher as Fat Joe as far as I'm concerned), but he isn't making an insane amount. If the Phils trade Fat Joe, they're going to have to eat most of his salary to get even a Single A project.

Give me a break, he has made two starts. He was on cruise control until the 5th inning against the MEts. Pitchers have struggled before. We know what we have in Joe, Average-to above average stuff. Right now he is struggling. It is real easy to look bad when you are surrounded by 4 number 1's...Joe when is on is a good number 4/5 pitcher, and he deserves more than just 2 games.

The Mets have done 2 DH already, despite being broadcast for only one game by mlb/espn...They have rights to the game, not the day. Comcast has a right to it...And the Phillies and Marlins need to agree on when to play...And smart money, money, money tells you that Charlie wants to play that DH when its warmer, like with any game. And when he knows up with Oswalt.

It's better this way...Blanton can still lose without giving us our first series loss.

Why not bring up Worley, and if he sticks and when Oswalt is fine send the worst bullpen picher to the minors and keep Kendrick and Blanton in the bullpen?

They have options for bullpen and fifth starter problems but I think with their good record they're going to let it play out a little longer. Blanton is likely going to settle back in to being a reliable fifth (we hope). That said, looking ahead to next year you can imagine Romero, Baez, and Lidge are gone from the pen and either Blanton or Kendrick is traded. That opens multiple spots for guys like Stutes, Mathieson, Worley, and DeFratus. Plus whatever they decide to trade for or pick up in free agency. The question is how much if any of that starts unfolding this year.

I'm praying for Charlie to start Halladay on Blanton's day, b/c I just bought non refundable Saturday game tickets to watch Halladay pitch in San Diego, before the rainout...Ughhhh, if I only would have waited a couple of more days...
