Billmeyer Named Bullpen Coach
Todd Zolecki
The Phillies have named Mick Billmeyer their bullpen coach.Billmeyer, 44, has been a member of the Phillies’ coaching staff for the past five years (2004-08) as the catching instructor. Before that he was the club’s minor league catching coordinator (2000-03) and the Angels’ bullpen/workout coordinator (1994-99).
Ramon Henderson, the team’s former bullpen coach, has been re-assigned to a minor league coaching position. Henderson, 45, spent 11 seasons (1998-2008) as the team’s bullpen coach before taking a leave of absence this past year for personal reasons.

Was Mick ever in the Big as a player? MIKE IN NY
CUT ME MICK!!!! CUT ME!! Clinton, NJ
We'll never find out what or who Ramon did, but it mustn't have been good.....Mick is a good guy, seems like he has fun and gets along with everyone down there....should be another good year for the pen in '09....... Mark1npt
He just got the ultimate job. I would give up everything to be the guy that just has to run the bullpen and warm guys up. I would give all of it up (not much) to do this for one summer in the Cape Cod League. This has to be the best job in the world. What say ye? What is better than this? mdhnyc
I watched Mick the first time he warmed up Billy Wagner in the BP for his first spring training game......he hadn't caught anyone throwing 100 mph before (this was back when Wagner was still on steroids)...he literally was having a blast.....someone next to him was cathing another reliever easily throwing 15-20 mph less......he was really diggin it while simultaneously fearing for his life.....and I think Henderson wanted no part of it..... Interesting. I would have thought that the bullpen coach would be a pitcher and not a catcher. Shows you what I know..... As for Ramon, let's give him the benifit of the doubt and assume he wanted to be closer to home and family..wish him all the best and hope to see him back at some future date jeff gross
jeff.....I agree. I don't think Ramon necessarily *did* anything. This could be more a reward for Mick. We all have to agree, last year's bull pen was the best ever. Mick, along with Roly deArmas, was a big part of that. Good luck to both Mick AND Ramon! Norma
im wondering if it was some off the field issue that carried over to his job performance and ended up angering charlie or the front office or both, but to be reassigned to the minors after being with the club 11 yrs and coming off a W.S. championship it must not have been good seems like the whole issue is being swept under the astroturf, It makes you wonder how much success of the bullpen this season can attribute to him or not? thekruker
First of all, the way baseball works is you hire friends and family....second you keep them on forever unless they do something really wrong (think drinking binge and punching out your CO), then you get demoted to serve out your days in obscurity......but with a steady pay check (lifetime loyalty).....having said that, we're picking apart a coaching position that is the least needed on the team. It really is kind of a made up job to give a friend of yours, not critical to overall team success.....much ado about nothing. Mark1npt

Ramon Henderson was a pretty good guy, worked for the Phils for several year. Don't know what his personal problems were, but the Phils still kept him in the minors. mike l
thekruker......Ramon wasn't even with the team for most of the season. He was on leave for personal reasons. So he didn't even really have a "job performance" this year. I'm sure we'll never know what his "personal issues" were, but this might actually be a request on his part. As mike l said, at least the Phils kept him in the minors. They can't be that unhappy with him. Minor league coaching is pretty important for developing the future of the team. Norma
