Benson Released

POSTED: Saturday, August 30, 2008, 4:43 PM

The Phillies have released triple-A Lehigh Valley righthander Kris Benson.

The Phillies signed Benson to a minor-league contract in Februrary with the idea that he could plug into the rotation sometime before June 1. But because of injuries, Benson progressed much more slowly than they had hoped. So the Phillies moved forward and acquired Joe Blanton before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, which eliminated the possibility that Benson would pitch in the Phillies rotation this season.

Even if there were an injury to a starting pitcher at this point, J.A. Happ would be the likley replacement.

We're not sure the exact reason why the Phillies released Benson, who was 1-4 with a 5.52 ERA in 11 starts in Lehigh Valley, but I'll pass it along once I do.

I am going to miss them. Of course I am referring to Anna's assets, they never even got to the bigs.

Down 0-2 Victorino took one for the team in the 6th resulting in bases loaded and bringing up Werth who singled in 2 go ahead runs. Great job guys. Myers pitched great but used 50 pitches to get through the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th innings which is probably why he wasn't effective in the 8th. Overall a good outing once again for Brett. The top 5 had 7 hits, 5 Ks, 2HBP, and 3 runs scored. Lately Howard has been more patient making them pitch to him. Thank God for Jason Werth great day at the plate.

As some of you may know Burrell is in a prolonged slump. While any number of mechanical problems can contribute to this I have noticed on predominant one. PAT THE BAT! YOU ARE PULLING YOUR HEAD OFF AT THE LAST SECOND MAN. With 4 weeks left DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT NOW!!! We need your bat down the stretch.

Wow, I guess that whole "we didn't want to sign Kyle Loshe for the reduced price he was willing to play for the 2nd time around because we already addressed that need with Kris Benson" argument doesn't really hold water now, does it? WHY COULDN'T WE HAVE DONE BOTH IN CASE SOMETHING LIKE THIS WERE TO HAPPEN...it isn't like you are selling out the stadium EVERY NIGHT.

Loved Romero's reaction after getting out of the bases load jam in the bottom of the 8th! Much needed win--let's hope that the Marlins can win tonight to give the Phils a boost in the standings. Let's win tomorrow and get a split. GO PHILS!

A great in-depth analysis by Mikemike. Good bye Kyle Losch, see ya Gavin Floyd, take care Randy Wolf, aloha Curt Shilling. They may all not be performing up what is considered salary worthy, but you can be sure they are better than Bensen, Seanez and Madson, not to mention Gordon. As for Latin ballplayers, why does that shock you. The Marlins are doing handstands and the lesser market teams are making names for themselves. Does anyone think its by accident or have you studied the names on the rosters. Typical Phillies ownership mentality.

First, a good win today, another gutty effort by Myers and it's topped off by a win by the fish tonight! One game out, again. On the other issue- people, let's stop the revisionist history, please. The Phillies offered Lohse 3 years and $21 million. Lohse confirmed he wouldn't take it. I also think it's hilarious that anyone uses the Marlins, who have a payroll in the $20 million range, to make the case that the Phillies, who've spent about $100 million more this year in salary, are cheap. On the latin payers issue- Ruiz, Feliz, Seanez? Where are they from, Iowa? In addition the Phuls top prospect is latin (Carrasco), they traded another top one in the Blanton deal and they have at least two blue chiplatin prospects in the minors. Sorry to let the facts get in the way of your argument. Rip management if you want to for making bad trades but the latin player argument lacks substance. GO PHILS!!!

I'm getting tired of the GOrdon bashing. ANyone else notice that our bullpen went to the Sh*tter when he went on the DL?? Can't say enough times how great a pitcher he was for us this year and last year. Without the set up guy, we're lost in the 8th inning (5 games in two weeks lost in 8th)

Why are the Phillies always engaging in "projects that don't work out" while the Cubs are trading for Harden and the Brewers for Sabathia? Gillick's latest high-impact signing -- Matt Stairs!! Hallelujah!! -- is typical of his cheap-arse fiddling at the margins.

Gillick's getting a free pass. Go back through his tenure and you'll see that he's worst than Wade. Gillick is a Walmart shopper.. People that know value don't shop at Walmart..He's leaving and were stuck with Reuben Amaro a Kmart guy..

Do you honestly believe the Phillies are the only team that has "projects that don't work out"? Maybe you don't hear about the "projects that don't work out" in other cities because your not reading their newspapers and checking their websites everyday.

Pat H you've lost your mind!! Moyer, Romero, Durbin, Feliz, Werth, Dobbs, Blanton, Lohse, Gordon (if you want to add him, Lidge, Rowand, they ALL came under Gillick's watch. It was he and the organization that sent Myers down knowing that he could be fixed in the minors and be the starter that Philly's been expecting to be. Last time I checked, Myers is pitching the best he's pitched since coming up the first time. Kendrick was brought up last year when the could've grabbed a AAA guy and he's been consistent. Moyer has been our stopper this year when we've needed a win. Dobbs is the best pinch hitter in baseball. Werth has been very good. Lidge has regained his nickname of lights out. Please, oh please name all of the Wade big signings/trades that have worked out for us. Name all the pitchers he's brought in that worked out for us. I'll tell you, he's done a heck of a job with the Astros, that's why he got choked out by a pitcher. If anything he's taken things backwards with that team. I think he's helped Philly out more since he took over in Houston. We can thank him for Lidge and being able to get rid of Bourn (who is nothing more than a 4th outfielder, pinch runner, and defensive replacement). Let's cheer the guy that built a team that couldn't get us over the hump and jeer the guy that built a team that made the playoffs last year and are only a game out. Gillick has rebuilt a bullpen that had been horrible under Wade and has finally given us a formidable starting 5. Oh and if you've read past blogs you'd know that Gillick has taken his lumps too courtesy of Truth and some of the others. I can only hope Amaro takes a page from Gillick's book instead of one from Wade's.
