MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Thursday performance of Antonio Bastardo allowed us to highlight what is on the verge of becoming a historic season for the 25-year-old lefthander.
Maybe Friday was even better. Bastardo threw 18 pitches Thursday when facing four batters and recording five outs. Then, a day later, he was asked to pitch the eighth inning and retired the side in order on 16 pitches. His ERA is 1.35.
Why is that important? Well, come postseason play, Bastardo will likely be asked to pitch more than one inning at times. And then, since he's the only lefty, he could be summoned on back-to-back days.
His durability has been tested often this season, and so far he has passed every test.
