Bastardo to start Tuesday; Amaro still looking for a pitcher

POSTED: Saturday, May 30, 2009, 11:49 PM

Today’s rotation update:

Antonio Bastardo will get the spot start Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean a lot for the Phils long-term pitching situation. Though Bastardo could certainly pitch well and earn more appearances, the Phillies continue to explore their options for a starting pitcher.

Ruben Amaro told me before the game that while Brett Myers’ injury has accelerated that process somewhat, he was not going to act irrationally because the team lost a starter. “There is a little more urgency now,” he said. “But we’re not going to make a move just to make a move.”

The hard part about making an early-June trade is that few teams have begun to unload talent. “It’s always difficult to make a trade, but it’s hard to find a partner right now because not many teams consider themselves sellers,” said Amaro.

Stay tuned.

I'd like to see the Phillies pick up a power righthander to replace Myers, someone like Ross Ohlendorf in Pittsburgh. I'd give up (for example) Drew Carpenter and another quality pitcher.

Andy, are they looking now for 1 pitcher or 2? It seems to me that Amaro was looking before Myers went down, and Myers wasn't the guy they were thinking of moving.

Bastardo is something special and if he gets a little better control he is going to be a number 2 pitcher

Why are the Phillies waiting 'with the stong team they have signed for the next 3 years, they need to make a move before the Mets do. Myers is finished as a Philly because his contract is up after this year.

I don't like the 4 lefthanders in a row either. As a matter of fact I don't like 3 in a row. Maybe it was a coincidence but Washington hit Hamels pretty well after facing a Happ the game before. That’s why is a good idea to split them.

I doubt any real scout will discount Bastardo's one game performance based on the body of his work. MLB people aren't all reactionary based on Sportscenter like half the people posting on here.

way to go rube....shoot your load prematurely. the kids a stud in the minors with infinite trade value. god forbid he stinks up the joint. where does his trade value go from there. give carasco the nod instead. maybe a change of scenary would do him good.

It can't be easy tying to land the same commodity that every other contending team is also looking for. Phils appear to have some decent talent to audition, and luckily the bats to hold down the fort while the auditioning is taking place. Patience everyone....things could be much worse.
