Bastardo to DL, Eyre rehab, Ibanez update

A few injury updates: Antonio Bastardo has been placed on the 15-day DL with a left posterior shoulder strain. LHP Sergio Escalona, who is racking up enough frequent flyer miles for a nice offseason vacation, has once again been recalled from Lehigh Valley.

Scott Eyre, whose absence has demonstrated how important he is to the bullpen, will begin a rehab assignment tomorrow for the Gulf Coast Phillies in Clearwater, Fla.

Raul Ibanez was limping around the clubhouse during the weekend series in Toronto, and said that while he hoped to return from the DL Friday, he was not sure if that would be possible. An on-time return seems unlikely.

Can Cervanek play middle infield. They need at least one bench guy that can play middle infield. And yes, Ben Kenobi/Eric Bruntlett has a fine beard. Oh yeah, when Raul comes back, keep Mayberry up and ditch Paul Bako already. If you didn't follow this team closely you would have no idea the guy was even on the team. - Nice to see Avery and Drabek doing well. That's some good ammo there for a guy like halladay. I may be worng but I'm still holding out hope for him. If we're going to get a top line pitcher, then go for it.— davekrieg
All I can say is, ya gotta love the Mets. As for Ibanez, I love this advice: "The Phillies' medical staff need to work with Raul to solve his injury problems." That's brilliant. Pure genius. I only pray that the Phillies' medical staff is reading this. (Reality is that a groin strain is a slow-healing, nagging injury that you cannot rush.) I haven't been checkin' in much lately, but man, this blog is certainly a shadow of what it was last year.— bobby- Carpenter is on a little bit of a roll right now. He hasn't given up more than 3 ER a start since he went back down to AAA. He has to be the short term solution if a trade can't be worked out almost immediately. Carrasco is inconsistent, but improving, two good starts with two bad ones right before that.— B in DC

- Glad to see Escalona getting another chance. Wish they showed as much patience with this promising youngster as they do with Taschner. And on the Bruntlett issue. . . Bring up Mike Cervenak instead. He's been having a great year batting and playing 3d base for the Iron Pigs, I mean seriously what have they got to lose. Lehigh's even been using him as a DH sometimes. He's getting it done, Bruntlett is not, simple as that.— phasor
- Regarding a SP, what we have to realize is that odds are we won't get one during this season. We will, however have a very good chance of getting one during off season (trade or FA). We need to know by then which of our prospects will be able to help us in 2010 or 2011 at lattest, and which won't. Not saying they aren't good, but they won't be able to help us. If we truly think that we'll go into next season with Cole, Brnaton, Happ, Carlos and Drubek, (with Myers a strong possibility as well) we need a solid 2-3 guy, but only one guy. IF we don't think that Carlos and/ or Drubek will help us next year we need a 2-3 and a 4-5. This year we win or loose with what we have— fan_in_jerusalem

- As for starting pitching, I totally agree about using the talent already in the system. Carrasco may not be ready and Carpenter may not be the answer, but there are enough pitchers close to being ready to make do. But I could see adding a reliever.— JayW

- hey Joe Smith, get over Derek Lowe. No one besides the Braves was giving a 4th year. It would have been stupid to give him that many years. They have no shot at Dan Haren(why would the DBacks get rid of him), Jake Peavy has a serious injury, and Clay Bucholz has proven nothing. Any other great moves you wanna make? Let's see what Carrasco and/or Drabek can do.— scars73

Hey Rube you Should have signed Derek Lowe last December. If you had a solid #2 like Lowe he would have paid for himself and then some. Since you botched that all up how about redeeming yourself with a Dan Haren , Jake Peavy or Clay Buchholz? That was not a cool comment concerning Eric Bruntlett hopefully that comment will disappear.- haha... they should activate the Phanatic to replace Bruntlett— Sillies

- The Phillies need Raul Ibanez back ASAP. The Phillies' medical staff need to work with Raul to solve his injury problems. His stability is sorely missed in this line-up. Carrasco deserves his chance to see where he measures-up against major league hitting. Bastardo had the fastball, but not yet the maturity and mental make-up to be in the major leaguers. It seemed Bastardo kept trying to throw the ball by the hitters, and when the hitters caught-up to his pitches, he kept trying to throw the ball harder and harder. I think Carrasco is more of a pitcher, not a thrower. Let's see what Carrasco can do with his opportunity.— RunningTheBases
