Baez placed on DL

POSTED: Friday, August 27, 2010, 1:46 PM

SAN DIEGO -- Add another to the list of disabled players for the 2010 Phillies.

Righthander Danys Baez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms Friday. Lefthander Antonio Bastardo was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley and will join the team here.

Baez is the 17th different Phillies player to go on the DL this season.

The righthander signed a two-year, $5.25 million deal in the off-season and has been disappointing in his first season as a Phillie. He is 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 45 games.

But the Phillies had seen progress in Baez, 32, recently. In his last three outings, Baez has been unscored upon and just two of the nine batters he has faced have reached base. Both times, they were erased on double-play balls.

In the 19 outings before then (since June 1), Baez had a 7.27 ERA in 17 1/3 innings.

Bastardo gives the Phillies a second lefthanded pitcher in addition to J.C. Romero. The Padres have three lefthanded batters: Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Stairs, and Will Venable. The Dodgers have four lefthanded hitters -- including Andre Ethier and James Loney. The Phillies are in Los Angeles beginning Monday.

Bastardo has a 5.54 ERA in 13 major-league innings this season. This will be his fourth stint with the Phillies in 2010.

If Amaro had picked up Cliff Lee, he could have cured Baez's back spasms, solved the Phils' inability to hit and driven down to DC to perform Tommy John surgery on Strasburg all before lunch. Lee also makes the best cheesesteak in the world and speaks Dutch.

Baez not available to pitch is the only good Phils news in the last 2 weeks.

smel, I would take Drabek over the garbage of Kendrick or Blanton any day. My guess as to why he is still in AA is they probably want him closer to the team so coaches can evaluate him more, as opposed to their triple A affiliation in Vegas. Also they have a great pitching staff, so they don't need him to start just yet

I suppose if Tonka looked in the mirror while posting that toddler- like post, he'd suddenly have a Woody Allen like anxiety attack. Most Phillies should be pretty satisfied with their second title in 130 year in 2008, and 7th trip to the World Series. Unless wins are like lines of cocaine on a mirror, most folks are having fun being a fan these days...even enduring hitting funks in the dog days of late August.

Bastardo is a beast! Now if we can only get Tuffy Gosewisch up here my all-phillies-funny-names team will be complete.

I don't know if it was all about maneuvering for the playoff roster. If Baez went on the DL before the playoffs, the Phillies still would have had the opportunity to call up someone in the organization as of August 31st who plays the same position as the guy who went on the DL.

@tburt17 anyone on the 40 man roster as of Aug 31 can replace a DL guy in post season... this is about the left handed hitters in SD and LA

Baez throws one scoreless inning and throws his back out. Classic.

I suspect this is nothing more than "stashing" Baez so Bastardo can fill in on this trip against the Padres and Dodgers, much like when the Mariners stashed Sweeney on the DL with back spasms.....a difficult condition to prove.....or disprove, but a good excuse to get a player up. Let's hope Bastardo doesn't spit the bit like he has the first 4 times he's been given the chance to hang at the ML level.....you figure sooner or later he'd figure it out and come thru for us. You shouldn't get that deer in the headlights reaction, every stinkin' time!
