Baez placed on DL

SAN DIEGO -- Add another to the list of disabled players for the 2010 Phillies.

Righthander Danys Baez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms Friday. Lefthander Antonio Bastardo was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley and will join the team here.

Baez is the 17th different Phillies player to go on the DL this season.

The righthander signed a two-year, $5.25 million deal in the off-season and has been disappointing in his first season as a Phillie. He is 3-3 with a 5.14 ERA in 45 games.

But the Phillies had seen progress in Baez, 32, recently. In his last three outings, Baez has been unscored upon and just two of the nine batters he has faced have reached base. Both times, they were erased on double-play balls.

In the 19 outings before then (since June 1), Baez had a 7.27 ERA in 17 1/3 innings.

Bastardo gives the Phillies a second lefthanded pitcher in addition to J.C. Romero. The Padres have three lefthanded batters: Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Stairs, and Will Venable. The Dodgers have four lefthanded hitters -- including Andre Ethier and James Loney. The Phillies are in Los Angeles beginning Monday.

Bastardo has a 5.54 ERA in 13 major-league innings this season. This will be his fourth stint with the Phillies in 2010.

This is probably as much about the post-season as the upcoming west coast trip. Having Bastardo on the 25 man roster prior to the September 1st roster expansion will now make him eligible for the playoffs. Slick maneuvering.

Oh no. Bastardo has been terrible since June 1. At least 1 earned run in 4 of 5 outings.

We need another left hander reliever and I guess Scott Eyre was not available.

68% of the phillies have been placed on the D.l. some more than once. Instead of firing the hitting coach they should fire the medical staff including the trainers. This must be a major league record for # of players on the D.L. It is amazing that they are still in contention for anything. The way they are hitting many should still be on the D.L.We play 8 on the west coast and if we are 5 or more out of the division or wild card when they return we can start playing the Iron Pigs in September.

They should put Kendricks and Blanton on the D.L and bring up 2 starters from Allentown that can get us through a first inning without being behind. Do we miss Moyer ? WOW. They are pathetic in the upper minors having traded everyone decent except Brown away and he is sitting on the bench. We need a new general manager. Those who complain about Jolly Charlie Manuel should realize he is doing a good job with what he has and all the injuries. With the exception of the Red Sox we have been hammered with injuries and learn to expect more of the same with the over 30 gang we have.

Tonka, hahahahahahahhahahaha??? Really? I can imagine you must be a stud with the ladies given your quick wit? The pick line goes something like "I like hamburgers and my mom let's me stay up until as late as I want" (insert Beavis and Butthead laugh).

Baez has been stealing money and he's got another year on his contract. I doubt that he's tradeable.

The Phils have been so good we now have trolls from other teams on philly.com. That's when you know you've made it.

Baez has been pitching much better lately. What are the brain-trusts doing to this team. Call up Worley and let him start for Kendrick.

Best injury ever. Nothing personal to Baez. He's just bad at baseball now. Could we not have gotten Fat Mike Z for this one? Bastardo is treading water at the MLB level this year. BTW - ESPN says Zagurski weighs 221. That's hilarious.

@naplesbear, You write, "They are pathetic in the upper minors having traded everyone decent except Brown away" but you don't write who was so decent that they traded who would make a difference today... Carrasco? Marson? Donald? Taylor? Kyle Drabek is still at AA. You want a new GM but you don't back up the assertion on which you claim to base your indictment of the team with any facts.
