Baez lit up in B game

POSTED: Saturday, February 26, 2011, 12:39 PM

TAMPA, Fla. -- We're less than an hour from the first Grapefruit League game, but there was already baseball this morning back in Clearwater. And it wasn't pretty for Danys Baez.

Baez allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in a B game against Toronto. Mostly minor leaguers and non-roster players played in the game. The Blue Jays won, 8-1.

The righthander's roster spot is not viewed as tenuous right now, but a shaky spring can change things. He is owed $2.75 million in 2011 after a lost 2010 in which he had a 5.48 ERA in 51 games.

Some other pitching lines:

Brian Bass: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K

Dan Meyer: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, BB, 2 K

Jose Contreras: 1.0 IP, BB, K

David Herndon: 1.1 IP, K

It will be such a shame to just give Beaz a roster spot because of how much he is being paid. He clearly hasn't earned it and has shown nothing in a over a year. Charlie wont use him so whats the point? Beaz spot in the bullpen should go to one of these guys who have actually shown something and have a future with the team. Worley, De Fratus, Mathieson, Stutes, Schwimer. It will be such a waste of a roster spot to give a spot to Beaz to be a bench warmer.

think they have to pay baez anyway this season if he does not shape up just keep him in the minors this year, manuel will NOT allow him to make the 25 man roster if he can't get anyone out.

Relax. If he keeps pitching this way he will be gone. They'll just release him. They'll still have to pay the 2.75 million, less what he gets paid by any team foolish enough to sign him. But one outing is too soon to make that judgment, and he's not costing the Phillies much for spring training.

And if by some stroke of luck or whatever, he gets back to being the Baez of several years ago, he'll be worth it. (Not holding my breath though)

He's still w/ the team gang, cause, like Matt said, he's owed 2.75 Million!!! That's why he's there... (and Durbin ain't). Baez is not tradeable ... most teams can get 2/3 of an inning in a 'B' game for a lot less $$$. NOT one of Ruben Amaro's better signings

Baez and "lit up" go hand and hand! Unlike others, even if he has a bad spring, I still don't see the Phillies cutting him...

Baez shelled? In another shocking revelation, scientists reveal that liquid water is wet.

You can either keep Danny Boy and pay him to stink or cut him and pay him not to stink.
