TAMPA, Fla. -- We're less than an hour from the first Grapefruit League game, but there was already baseball this morning back in Clearwater. And it wasn't pretty for Danys Baez.

Baez allowed five earned runs on five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in a B game against Toronto. Mostly minor leaguers and non-roster players played in the game. The Blue Jays won, 8-1.

The righthander's roster spot is not viewed as tenuous right now, but a shaky spring can change things. He is owed $2.75 million in 2011 after a lost 2010 in which he had a 5.48 ERA in 51 games.

Some other pitching lines:

Brian Bass: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K

Dan Meyer: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, BB, 2 K

Jose Contreras: 1.0 IP, BB, K

David Herndon: 1.1 IP, K

Hey--did folks see that Durbin signed with Cleveland? Too bad for the Indians, good for us. Now, if we could move Baez somewhere and get something. Maybe a new water cooler for the clubhouse. That sounds fair.

We'd be lucky to get an OLD, USED water cooler that doesn't even work. Even THAT sounds fair.

Phils should have signed Durbin for the low price Cleveland got him for.

Baez can work miracles. He's the only pitcher on the roster who makes Phillies fans hope they put Kyle Kendrick in the game.

Baez should be traded for a 5 gallon bucket of sunflower seeds, and then we would get the best of the deal !!

Baez's spot on the roster SHOULD be "tenuous," at best!

Baez getting lit up is as common as rain in April.

Baez gave up 5 earned runs at a time when pitchers are way ahead of hitters in early spring, and in a B game with B talents playing......cut him already and spare us from hearing about him again.

"Most of": The fact that a grown man would have that kind of screen name shows just how much of a loser you are. Now go back down stairs. Your mom is calling you for dinner.

Why is Baez still on team, he should be one of the first cuts.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
