Third baseman Placido Polanco was placed on the disabled list Thursday with lower back inflammation. The team said his roster replacement will be announced before the start of the team's three-game series in Atlanta Friday.
Polanco had missed the Phillies' last three games because of the ailment. Manager Charlie Manuel said the injury is similar to a back injury that bothered the third baseman for much of last season.
The Phillies do not figure to miss Polanco's bat. Since his average topped out at .294 on June 4, he had hit just .184 with five extra-base hits -- all doubles -- in 32 games.
As we saw during Wednesday's extra-inning win over Milwaukee, the Phillies do miss Polanco's glove when he is not in the lineup. Ty Wigginton, playing in place of Polanco at third, committed two errors, including a dropped pop up that allowed the Brewers to score a go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning.
Because he is considered a solid defensive player, Michael Martinez is probably a candidate to be recalled. Mike Fontenot can also play third base.
His contract cannot expire fast enough. PhightinPhil
Good Lord, not Michael Martinez! Please, please, PLEASE make a deal. dasher
Polanco and Rollins always finds a way to get some time off. Lets Eat- rollins missed 3 games for the birth of his child. what a jerk comment.

Chase Headley...Trevor May and Maikel Franco. Done deal. FABER
No Martinez or Ty but boy howdy, Chase Headley would be a nice fit. Koons
Wigginton is the worst butcher in the field I've ever seen --might as well follow Thome's lead and get rid of his glove...better yet, take his lead and go to the A.L. warbiscuit- What no dopey "Hamels can't wait to get out of town" comments today?
DogBiscuitthedope
Aramis Ramirez was a slam-dunk no-brainer logical signing for cluless rube to have signed this past off-season, went for much less than Rollins and bats cleanup... though he's not a great fielder, Polanco is simply not a major league starter with his non-existent bat (nor is Martinez) and frequent injuries, and Aramis makes Wigginton looks lije a gold-glover warbiscuit- What no dopey Kendrick comments today?
DogBiscuitthedope - Oh one more thing dopey loser, you act like just because someone is available the Phillies are the only team allowed to bid for there services? Maybe Ramirez wanted to go somewhere else (probably read some of your quotes) maybe someone would offer him more $$ because their need was greater. Even if they signed him you would have complained about how much they spent you moronic dopey loser tool
DogBiscuitthedope
meant that Wigginton makes Aramis look like gold-glover warbiscuit- Hey dopey Carlos Pena is batting 191. LOL, idiot
