I am in the aiport en route to Miami, so I have no news for you regarding Cole Hamels or the Phils weak effort today.  Jim Salisbury does, however, and he's already posted some of it  on our website.

But I can tell you that this week's competition for Wise Comment of the Week was tight.  The discussion regarding my suggestion that Manuel should have named names in his Monday quasi-rant was particularly thoughtful, though no one seemed to agree with me (I can take it).  But bski, always a source of mature and rational thoughts, offered a nice take.  Congrats, bski, your random letters will identify you in the Sunday paper.

Also, props to the group for self-policing some racist commentary on the same subject.  You have the power to keep this thing respectable, and I applaud you for exercising it.

This is the next step in the progression for Manuel. He has been talking about how the team needs to forget about last season success and start focusing on what they need to do to be successful this season for a little while now. It seems like each successive statement he makes on the subject is more stern and foreboding. This one almost comes across as a parental thing. You know, like when you were a kid and you were horsing around/fighting/making a racket with a brother/sister/friend and one of your parents would yell, "Don't make me come up there!", or "If you guys can't work it out, I'll work it out for you!", that type of thing. Well, it sounds to me like the parental warning has been issued and if the situation doesn't correct itself very soon, then Charlie will address it (i.e. the individual player or players) directly, just like he has in the past.

I agree with bski's take. And I appreciate his thoughtful and mature comments. Wish they were all like that.

Thanks, Andy. I know my blog name looks like random letters. However, it's the first letter in my first name and the last 3 letters of my last name. I should have capitalized the B, or put a period in between to break it up right from the start, but I didn't. I've stuck with it simply for the sake of continuity.

As for today's game, I can't believe it. Hamels finally looked like the Hamels of late 2008 with 6 strikeouts in his 3.1 innings only to get drilled by Fielder and leave the game. Cruel fate does not want us to build any momentum whatsoever. As for the series against the Brewers, after the Phils offense busts out with 11 runs (against a left-hander, btw.) in game 1, they proceed to muster only 2 runs (on 2 solo HRs) in the final 2 games (against two so-so right-handers that are team is built to hammer, btw). Go figure, huh? Looking forward, the unbeatable Marlins were swept by the Pirates. However, we will be facing Johnson and Volstad, who are much better than the two righties we just lost to, in the first two games of the series. Something's gotta break right for us soon, don't you think?

Here's a quote from Hamels: "Oh, yeah," he said. "I'll be fine. I've gotten hit in much worse spots, spots where you don't really come back as fast. I'll be able to go out there and pitch in five days. Hopefully it'll finally be five days instead of the six or seven because of these rainouts."............Good to hear. Hopefully there will not be any lingering effects that will set him back for a start or two.

Andy, why on earth would Charlie call out player's by name in the press? When has that ever worked for a coach? Unless you're Phil Jackson, that sort of thing doesn't work. Charlie doesn't have a problem communicating with his players either...he'll just call someone into his office and rip them a new one if he wants to get on a particular player. Other than creating some sort of media "controversy" for you guys to write about, I don't see how calling out players by name in the press helps.

JimG gets it, Hamels will be fine and bski deserves a case of kilbasa courtesy of Andy, who had to write much less this week because of him. Murph apparently does not have a sharp Polish intern.

We need Myers to pitch well today. Charlie needs to wake up the whole team, except for Stairs. He's awesome.

Yeah Clinton, bski is a lot more manageable..............I forgot to ask if anyone else has read the espn.com article about Lenny Dykstra. Here is the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4084962.............It is a rather lengthy but thorough expose documenting how Lenny has gotten himself to the point where his life seems to be on the verge of blowing apart. Very sad, really.

Congrats bski…. Lenny fell from grace in a hurry. Wasn’t he profiled recently in Fortune Magazine or a similar publication as some kind of a Wall Street genius? Now he is in legal disputes with his own family, among other things.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
