Phillippe Aumont sticks as Phillies option Michael Schwimer

POSTED: Thursday, August 23, 2012, 4:33 PM

In somewhat of a surprise move, it was Michael Schwimer who temporarily lost his job Thursday in the latest Phillies bullpen shuffle.

Schwimer was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley to make space for lefty Jeremy Horst, who was activated from the paternity leave list. It's temporary, solely because Schwimer will almost certainly be back once rosters expand Sept. 1.

For now, it secures a spot for Phillippe Aumont, who is likely to spend the remainder of the season in the majors.

Schwimer, at times, was one of the more dependable arms in a tattered Phillies bullpen. The 26-year-old righty had a 1.93 ERA in 23 1/3 innings during a two-month stretch that began June 10. Recently, he was hit hard in his previous three outings, surrendering eight hits and five runs in 2 2/3 innings.

The addition of Josh Lindblom took away many of Schwimer's chances in the eighth inning.

Schwimer has big league stuff. Faint praise perhaps, but he's been more reliable than most of the guys still in the bullpen. A couple of rough outings to be sure...but as the article notes, a good stretch of solid pitching that several of the others didn't have. Was just starting to post the nos. of K's that he rang up in the minors. Hope that Reuben has a good explanation, because this kind of thing does not build confidence. Aumont's LV stats weren't in the same league with the numbers Schwimer put up there. Schwimer pitched better in the bigs than Aumont pitched at LV. How do they send down Schwimer over Rosenberg? Lindblom is not the answer...certainly not in our ballpark. Hoping that this is just a temporary setback and that Schwimer will be back soon. Given the chance, he will help us next year.

I'm sorry, I know his numbers say otherwise, but I don't think Scwimer has what it takes to be a reliable bullpen arm. I support this move, let's see what the next guys have to offer.

It makes no difference at this point. One lousy pitcher for another. Worry more that Charlie put Polanco & Schneider in Wednesday's lineup in stead of two hot hitters in Frandsen & Kratz. Those decisions for whatever lame reasons he gave says so much about Charlie's decision making. Inconsistent, at best...and not acceptable for the future.

SilliBilli is right: Schwimer and Herndon are big, right-handed arms with straight fastballs, decent velocity and inconsistent location. They can get hit very hard. If either one was the mop-up guy, OK, I guess. But I trust neither with the ball in a key situation. Lindblom, Horst, Aumont? Who knows? They're worth a look.

When a guy has a slider as good as Schwimmer that also can get a fastball up at 94-96, you DON'T give up on him so easily...Herndon throws a heavy sinker, but has nowhere near the velocity Schwimmer's had the past 2 seasons....Regarding Horst...patiently waited his turn while turning in a 2.11 ERA at LV (behind Bastardo,Savery,Diekman,Valdes), only to come up to the Phils and in 16 games, go 17 IP with 20Ks, a 1.06 ERA while holding opponents to a .213 BA...I'd say Jeremy Horst desreves MORE than a "look".

Cholly Manuel needs to be optioned to Mayberry, NC. Sitting on the porch, whittlin away with Floyd the Barber, Emmett the Fix-It man and Goober Pyle. The silly, old fool can tell stories about how he won a Worlds Series by cheating with PEDS, sign stealing and telling the stupid Philadelphia fans stories that hadn't a shred of truth to them.

Guys as long as Charlie is the manager you are going to see inconsistant line ups and bad situational managing.

Talent makes any manager look good and lack of talent makes them look bad. This bullpen, mostly because of season ending injuries, lacks talent. A manager can only call on the players he has available.
