April 3 - Nationals vs. Phillies

POSTED: Thursday, April 3, 2008, 1:27 PM

Jimmy Rollins' hustle to third base on a Shane Victorino sacrifice bunt led to the game-winning run in the 10th.

Phils win, 8-7.

*

Tom Gordon survived the ninth and the game is in extra innings.

*

The Nationals made it 7-7 in the eighth when Cristian Guzman hit a ball through the hole into shallow left field. The ball just got past third baseman Pedro Feliz and hit off the heel of Jimmy Rollins' glove and bounced into the outfield.

*

The Phillies finally have a little offense going and have taken the lead in the sixth, 7-6. They hit seven-straight singles to tie the game, 6-6. They knocked Jason Bergmann and Saul Rivera from the game in the process. Ray King entered to face Jimmy Rollins with two on and one out. He hit Rollins with a pitch to load the bases and Shane Victorino singled to left to score the go-ahead run. This offense should keep things interesting all season. It's just a matter of them pitching better -- and playing better defense.

*

Jamie Moyer lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (three earned runs) and one walk. Jason Bergmann, meanwhile, has cruised through four, striking out the side (Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell and Geoff Jenkins) in the fourth.

*

Chris Coste homered in the third to make it 5-1. It snapped a streak of 13-straight innings in which the Phillies didn't reach second base.

*

Jamie Moyer loaded the bases with no outs in the second -- thanks partly to his own error -- but got a 1-2-3 double play and struck out Aaron Boone to get out of the inning. I'm calling it. It's the turning point of the season.

OK, I'm not calling it.

*

Sloppy, ugly.

Take your pick.

The Phillies started their series finale against the Washington Nationals in miserable fashion. Cristian Guzman hit the second pitch from Jamie Moyer off the right field wall for a double. Lastings Milledge reached on a throwing error from Jimmy Rollins, his second error in three games. Ryan Zimmerman hit into a should-have-been double play, but Chase Utley made a bad throw to first base to allow Zimmerman to reach safely and Guzman to score. It only got worse from there. Moyer walked Austin Kearns to put runners on first and second. Aaron Boone singled to score Zimmerman to make it 2-0. Ronnie Belliard doubled to left-center to score two more to make it 4-0. Felipe Lopez flied out to rightfielder Geoff Jenkins for the second out, which drew mock applause from fans. Jesus Flores then ripped a double down the third-base line to score Belliard to make it 5-0.

Fans are not happy.

Understandibly so.

swept by the nats is not the best start for the Phils. Im not pushing any panic button or writing any crazy articles in the DN but it is not helping the traditional paranoia here in philly.

Gillick is right. It is a 3 horse race. The Braves, Mets, and Nationals. The Phillies are an embarrassment. Another poor start to a season. No sense of urgency! Makes me remember why I dislike Pro sports. Look for another mediocre season on the playing field, while they collect their millions and go out clubbing late at night and score with porn stars. They don't care.

its not just the first two loses or the bad start today, it is the fact that the three games have shown a different issue. game 1 was pitching, Game 2 - hitting, and today - fielding. it can only go up from here right?

we don't set the starting lineup, we just go out and cheer year after year. that, and we're accustomed to disappointment, makes life easier.

AIP, Once the teams start winning championships, expect to see disinterest. We'll win a championship, then people will be like "cool, ok, now what? this totally has no affect on my life"

AIP/Loren, the civility and rational thinking exudes from both of your posts. I bash the Phillies b/c it never ceases to amaze me that ppl put so much time and energy into this cheap franchise. They forced the city to contribute to a stadium when city schools are failing, when kids don't have computers or books. This ownership should be ashamed to call themselves Philadelphians or Americans......

nice way to battle back but the clutch hitting in the last few innings was maddening. especially after jenkins lead off double.

I think the bullpen will be just fine and they have to give Moyer, Kendrick, and Eaton at least 5 or six starts to see what they can do. If they arent having quality starts by that time, then its time to replace them. Give everyone time!

Nothing like a *walk-off walk* to win a game! On 4 pitches. I think Colome forgot how to throw across the plate after 2 straight intentional walks. LOL!

good to see the first win of the year. the pen did an admirable job keeping them in the game after moyer got roughed up. hopefully that can continue. the rival's pitching is getting injured by the moment Pedro and Hampton hopefully the phils can take advantage

look the way the phils have performed the last three games has been fully open to complain. the pitching/hitting/fielding had been sub par in each game. the kool aid drinkers of blind faith have to see that. and the realists have to understand it isn't doom and gloom either. they warts and they need to fix them early so it doesn' bite them later.
