April 22 - Phillies vs. Rockies

POSTED: Tuesday, April 22, 2008, 9:33 PM

Yawn.

Just another big hit for Pat Burrell, who's hitting .563 (9 for 16) with two homers and 14 RBIs with runners in scoring position. He crushed a double to left-center field with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning to clear the bases in an 8-6 victory over the Rockies. The Rockies intentionally walked Ryan Howard to get to Burrell, setting up the double play and a righty-on-righty situation. The move didn't work out.

"He averaged 50 homers the last two years," Burrell said of Howard. "Is he swinging the bat the way he wants to right now? No, but that can change with one pitch so I'm sure that's what they were thinking."

It looked like Howard was about to pass Chase Utley on the bases after Willy Taveras laid out and missed Burrell's ball.

"Nah, I just had a good read," Howard said. "The ball just kind of hung up there and I saw where Taveras was. And I saw Chase kind of take off quick and then start to come back. At first I didn't think Taveras was going to get there and right before I got to the bag I was going to see if he caught it or not. But once he dove and it got past him I just made the read and took off. Chase had put the brakes on and I was right there. I was yelling, 'Go, go, go, go, go!' I think there was about five 'go's' in there."

*

The good times from the streaker has ended as Garrett Atkins hit a two-run homer to left to make it 6-4.

*

We're going streaking! A female streaker clad in jeans and bra just ran onto the field in the bottom of the seventh. Normally in these situations players back the heck away, but leftfielder Pat Burrell couldn't help but take a few steps closer as she ran into the arms of security guards. Jayson Werth also didn't budge as she was escorted off the field almost directly past him. Werth held his glove over his face to hide his laughter, we presume.

Oh, yeah, Werth hit a homer in the top of the seventh to make it 4-4.

*

Matt Holliday crushed a solo homer to center in the fifth to make it 4-3. Myer has allowed 10 hits through the first five innings.

*

The Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the fourth when Jeff Francis, who shut down the Phillies in Game 1 of the NLDS last year, struggled with his command. He walked Pat Burrell, allowed a single to Pedro Feliz, walked Brett Myers and walked So Taguchi to force in a run. But Myers allowed three hits in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-3.

*

Brett Myers is 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in four career starts at Coors Field. He allowed back-to-back doubles to Todd Helton and Matt Holliday in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.

*

OK, we get it. Chase Utley is on fire. He doubled to left-center field in the third inning to score Eric Bruntlett and Jayson Werth to hand the Phillies a 2-0 lead. Utley popped out to shortstop Clint Barmes in his first at-bat. Still waiting for that first homer, Chase.

More clutch hitting eluding us......Myers is doinking around with cureballs and missing his spots by a foot, keeps getting tattooed, whatever happened to his being aggressive and attacking the zone?

Your Ace should be able to get you over the hump and above .500 for the first time all year, shouldn't he? Guess again....how many pitches were left out over the plate and served up on a "Tee" by Myers tonight? Pitiful.

What the Hell got into Burrell this year. Wasn't it just 2 years ago that we were NOT booing him because he was so bad that we actually felt bad for him?

Another great win! Sounds like Pat the Bat was inspired by the streaker! Imagine if Rollins and Howard and Victorino were in the line-up. Oh, wait...

I think Chase is in a slump. Only 2 hits and no HR's! LOL!

Very nice win. Pat has been HUGE. Hopefully Chase will break out of his "slump" soon. lol the Phils can make it 4 in a row with Hamels on the mound against a good Brewers offense tomorrow.

Pat has been HUGE because it's a contract year... just like Rowand last year. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Pat figured something out the second half of last year, this isn't just a contract year thing.....looks like the big guy might finally have grasped what Dallas green was saying all these years. The question is, does the Phillie brass beleive it and do they have the cajones to sign him for more than 1 year?

What a great at bat by Burrell, down 0-2 then working it to a full count, then the hit. And props to Howard, that was a slick fade away slide and I gotta admit I was laughing watching him run up Chase's butt. And thanks to Clint Hurdle for what has to be the dumbest move of the week, walking Howard. Between the Phil's and the Fly boys, a perfect sports night.

Feels good to finally get over the 500 mark for the first time this year. Great win!

It's great that the Phils are winning some games and finnally made it over .500, but it still does not calm the many concerns with this team. Chase Utley and Pat Burrell are carrying this team, but how much longer can their respective hot streaks realistically continue? The rest of the team MUST begin contributing on a consistent basis. Werth and Dobbs are chipping in, but Howard needs to get going NOW. Also, it isn't a good sign that your "ace" gets lit up. With all that said, I'm excited to see the Phils over .500 with only a few players earning their paychecks. When the entire team gets rolling it should be quite a sight.

To say burrell is just playing well due to his contract year is not true. he has played well last year as well. It seems his swing is different and seems more patient. I think he got a bad rap and with the addition of Howard and Utley that has taken pressure off him. I see him back in Pinstripes next year make a whole lot less but he seems happy and will come back.

I am packing up the truck today and making the hour and half ride up to Milwaukee for tonights game. It's a nice stadium and it is easy to get tickets (second row from field on third base line, bought 3 days ago). My wife will be the one wearing the I Heart Pat Burrell shirt if they flash us on tv. Hopefully we see a win.

The 'Pen has been a pleasant surprise. Let's get Kendrick back on track and were in business! Does Carlos Ruiz need a couple games on the bench? He is struggling a bit.

Colorado has not been playing great ball all year. It's amazing how manic YOU fans are. Its a 162 gm season. Each pitch, each hit matters each mgr decision matters but keep it in perspective. Go to the Kimmel Ctr and take in a show. Maybe the National Constitutional ctr etc, but chill......

The game has now been switched to CN8. Can someone please post about the reception Geoff Jenkins gets? Charlie was pretty sure he'd start tonight.

Stop talking about Myers like he's the "ace". It should be obvious to anyone that Hamels is the ace.

Truth, as usual, is a joke. Zero credibility. Don't hold your breath on RH, dude. And how's that homophobia issue?

Truth should change his name to Sad. it is just a shame to read his posts. He has nothing of note to say, but that never stops him. Pitching is impressing me this year. If that can remain solid, the offense will continue to pick up the pace and we have a chance for a great year. Go Phillies!!!

Cupcake in LA-your obsession is priceless. Is it b/c you have no wit and want to learn a little? Is it b/c you're lonely and need someone to chat with? Is it b/c deep down this is an excuse when your "beard" walks by you can say your posting but really your just gazing at Zo's pic? Probably all of the above. Does that answer your question? Have you and JM set up your "time to meet in a bathroom" at one of the games?

Actually we meet at the Ashburn statue before the game when John comes into town. Will do it again this year at the 5/18 game. Perhaps you can get a day pass from the half way house to come down. Do you have anything else intelligent to contribute or just more senseless babble?
