April 21 - Phillies vs. Rockies

The Phillies win, 9-5. I'd say something about how the Phillies got revenge on the Rockies after last year's showing in the NLDS, but I find that a little ridiculous. One regular season win doesn't erase getting swept in the playoffs. But the victory gets them back to .500.

*

How about Carlos Ruiz? He entered his two-out, bases loaded at-bat in the eighth inning hitting just .196, but he laced a double to right field to score two runs to hand the Phillies a 6-5 lead. Tom Gordon overcame T.J. Bohn's error in the bottom of the eighth to throw a scoreless inning.

Kyle Kendrick allowed eight hits, five runs, two walks and two home runs in five innings. He struck out two.

The Phillies continue to play long ball, even if it means using their legs in the process. Jayson Werth crushed a ball to center field to leadoff the sixth. The ball took a nice bounce off the wall toward left field (and away from Rockies centerfielder Willy Taveras) and Werth got an inside-the-park homer to make it 5-3. Chase Utley followed with a solo homer to right to make it 5-4.

Utley is on fire. He has homered in five-straight games, which ties Bobby Abreu (2005), Mike Schmidt (1979) and Dick Allen (1969) for the franchise record.

Pat Burrell stays hot. He hit a two-run homer to left in the fourth inning to make it 3-2. Chase Utley saved the Phillies a couple runs in the bottom of the third when he made an absolutely incredible diving catch and turned it into an inning-ending double play. Kyle Kendrick also stranded a runner at third with one out in the fourth to keep it a one-run game.

*

The Rockies took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run homer to left field.

Here's tonight's lineup for the Phillies: 1) So Taguchi 2) Jayson Werth 3) Chase Utley 4) Ryan Howard 5) Pat Burrell 6) Pedro Feliz 7) Carlos Ruiz 8) Eric Bruntlett 9) Kyle Kendrick.
