Antonio Bastardo out with self-inflicted wound

POSTED: Friday, June 15, 2012, 11:02 PM

TORONTO — The left side of Antonio Bastardo's face looks as if he entered a boxing ring, but he merely stepped foot in the weight room Wednesday. It was after he allowed a run to Minnesota and he was not pleased with his effort.

He took his anger out on a squat machine, which returned the favor. He required stitches to close a large cut above his left eye, which was nearly swollen shut after Friday's game.

Bastardo insisted he could see out of the eye, and demonstrated by covering his right one and pretending to punch a reporter in the face. But he was not available to pitch Friday barring an emergency situation and could need a few more days to recover.

A large bandage covers the gash.

Are you kidding me? Really? Ruiz with a strained oblique and Bastardo has a "self inflicted" wound? Really? Did I read this correctly? Is there anyone not wounded? And why the heck is anyone blaming Charlie? Put a fork in this team....they are done.

Ruben needs to be the first to go. Cholly, basically doesn't have too much to work with. Sandberg for 2013 with no Amaro will be a nice start.

The season is over, and there is now no need to bring Howard and Utley up o the majors. Let them extend their rehab over the shorter minor league season, and try to come back year at full throttle.

FOR REAL NOW, WITH NO NEGATIVE INTENT, LET AT LEAST HOWARD TAKE THE REST OF THIS YEAR TO RECOVER FULLY AND COME BACK NEXT SEASON. THERE IS NO NEED TO RUSH HIM BACK TO THIS MASH UNIT OF A TEAM AND RISK A MAJOR "SETBACK" THAT COULD BE A LONG TERM PROBLEM FOR HIM. DEVOTE THE REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR TO FINDING OUT IF ANY OF THE TOP PROSPECTS CAN PLAY AT THE MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL.

Charlie was the perfect manager for the Phillies when all he had to do was write down the line up. Now, with choices to make, he needs to be replaced. Make Jim Thome, DH/PH/Hitting Coach.
