Fun with April numbers
Andy Martino
Here are some April numbers I compiled while I made like Arlen Specter and enjoyed a morning waffle. Look for a more complete list in tomorrow's Inquirer.
· 9: come-from-behind victories.
· .270: the team batting average, up from .255 in 2008.
· .241: leadoff hitter Jimmy Rollins’ on-base percentage.
· 7: Home runs by free agent acquisition Raul Ibanez.
· .359: Ibanez’s team-leading batting average
· 3: stolen bases by the 36-year-old Ibanez, sharing the team lead with Shane Victorino.
· .254: Pat Burrell’s batting average with Tampa Bay. He has one home run.
· 2: Regular chants at Citizens Bank Park that sound like “boo”: “Ra-ooool” for Ibanez and “Louuuuuuu” for rookie catcher Lou Marson.
· 8: The major-league leading amount of home runs allowed by Brett Myers.
· 4.83: Myers’ team-leading earned run average.
· 0: Wins by Cole Hamels.
· 93: The velocity in miles-per-hour of Hamels’ fastball before he sprained his ankle on Tuesday.
As a new Philadelphian, I have two questions for you residents. Having watched Myers for all these years, how concerned are you right now? And, does it bother you that the senator you elected from one party has switched to another, or has the guy earned the right to fight for his re-election?

Myers,Myers,Myers Harry's song was High Hopes he must have been thinking about Bret Myers and year after year he get's the opener and he will not show up until July.Take Him out to the ballpen and keep him there because we will never get the money he robbed back from him. turkj
Hey Andy, Just caught your segment on Angelo and the Morning Team. It was cool that they talked about this blog and the comments about Specter. It's funny that they were teasing you about leaving New York. You don't sound like a New Yorker. Where are you really from? CenterCityPhan
Spector may not have a slider, but obviously IS A SLIDER. mick314
Because there won't be a new blog til closer to game time and because I don't want to spend my day thinking about getting rained out or rained on when I've got tickets this weekend, I'll think about an answer to CCP. Andy's from Western PA. Listen to him on Mike Gill - he's definitely not from LI as I thought someone mentioned before. I don't really care as long as the writing stays as unbiased as it's been. GO PHILS! oldecityslicker

Even though I am a B. Myers fan, it does concern me that he slimmed down just to get a new deal. However, it should still be an exciting year. I hope people will see through A Specter, but who knows. furio
I'd say we can officially begin the Chan "Heave Ho" Park watch. How many more starts will he get before he heads to the pen and Happ takes his spot in the rotation? bski
I'm guessing Park gets a couple more chances then JA gets a shot. Let's hope Blanton gets it together this weekend. spinmeister
WANTED: Professional starting pitcher. Must be able to pitch 6+ innings every 5th day. Must throw strikes. Ability to keep the ball in the park and pitch scoreless innings a plus. Qualified applicants (and anyone else with a functioning arm) apply in person at Citizen's Bank Park, One Citizen's Bank Way, Philadelphia, PA. Multiple positions available. RollinsWasRight
remember, specter is the opportunist schmuck who came up with the jfk assassination superbullet idea ('proving' that oswalt killed the president) strictly as a gambit to suck up with the big boys in d.c. myers is the lunkhead schmuck who bopped his missus on the streets of boston. sub-humans the both of them. kiwi- My first game at the ballpark this year and I have to watch helplessly as our #5 starter gets rocked yet again. This was an experiment, and the results are in. Charlie will probably give him one or two more starts, but I agree that it's time for Happ. The question then is whether Park can be effective in the bullpen. Happ has looked pretty solid in middle relief, so we need to replace him if he goes into the rotation. Then again, maybe Happ stays where he is and we see the mythical... Carlos Carrasco. (Is it me, or has he been our top prospect for like 8 years?) Either way, change is in the wind... bobby
Bobby......Everything I have read says that the Phils brass really wants Carrasco to pitch a full season at AAA. He's still young, and green, and they want him to mature. I'm thinking the pecking order is Happ(since he could have/should have earned the 5th spot in the spring), Kendrick(Since he has big league experience and is doing pretty well----2.77 era in AAA), then Carrasco. I wouldn't expect to see Carrasco with the Phils this year unless we run into injury problems with our starters and are forced to bring him up. bski- Fire Dubee and bring Nichols from Triple A. Send Coste to Triple A or release him when Ruiz is off the disable list. I can't believe we gave up on two young catchers -first Jaramillo and then Pualino -and kept this old journeyman. He can’t don anything right. I’ve been saying for the while now, move JRoll out the lead off spot. He is killing us. As for Park, I'll give him one last chance. That's it. He pitched horrible last night, but in the game prior to last night he wasn’t that bad. And in the game before that one, Ibañez misplayed a hit into a triple that led to two runs. So instead of two runs he gave up four. EL Zorro
- I am concerned about Bret but I'm pretty sure he'll come around, it's still early enough in the season. I would prefer to leave politics out of a discussion about baseball, because baseball is something we all love, and that particular topic is, especially in this day and age, divisive at best. But we all agree on one thing - GO PHILLIES!!!!! DaveCicc
