Amaro: Rollins is better

Jimmy Rollins was feeling better Thursday, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said, after the shortstop left Wednesday's game with tightness in his right hamstring.

The GM said Rollins remains day-to-day.

Rollins injured his hamstring running from first to second on a two-out double in the third inning Wednesday. He was replaced by Wilson Valdez.

After the game, Charlie Manuel said Rollins had been sick and did not take batting practice. Other players, including catcher Paul Hoover, had also been ill, Manuel said.

The manager was told dehydration from the sickness could have led to the tight hamstring. Rollins was not available for comment.

"Our trainer and the doctor, they felt like he was going to be OK," Manuel said. "That's kind of the impression they gave me."

Rollins, who has already missed 59 games this season due to a right calf strain and bruised left foot, was visibly upset upon entering the dugout after scoring a run in the third. He sat on the bench with his head down talking to head athletic trainer Scott Sheridan. A few seconds later, he stood up, ripped off his skull cap and headed down the tunnel back to the clubhouse.

The Phillies are obviously optimistic about Rollins based upon roster moves made Thursday. Lefthander Nate Robertson, who was tagged for six runs in Wednesday's game, was designated for assignment. But an infielder -- as insurance for Rollins -- was not added.

Instead, the Phillies claimed righthander Cesar Carrillo off waivers from the Padres. Carrillo, 26, went 5-14 with a 5.60 ERA in 27 starts for triple-A Portland this season. Carrillo was not added to the active roster.

In addition, righthander Scott Mathieson was placed on the disabled list Thursday with a strained back muscle. Mathieson said Wednesday he was stiff but that he would be fine. Apparently that changed overnight.

I don't care except about getting rid of Robertson. If he's not there, Charlie won't be tempted to use him. I'd rather see Utley try to pitch an inning.

Would have preferred that Amaro added another lefthanded reliever instead of a righthander, who apparently sucked in Triple A, but glad they axed Robertson. Too bad about Mathieson, but they clearly were unimpressed with his performances at this level and did not worry about putting him on the DL. If Lidge is down for any length of time, Madson and Contreras will close and Durbin will set up. Have to hope that the big Three starters continue to go seven or eight innings. Blanton will go six, which may mean Herndon and/or Romero will pitch the seventh. Kendrick will go four or five, so let's hope Worley becomes the man and can go at least six. Of course, the legendary Dannys Baez is coming back. Charlie will be doing a juggling act without Lidge.

At least it's not Mathieson's elbow. A 3rd tommy john would do him in.

Ruben is something. In Carrillo's last start at AAA he gave up 10 runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings including FIVE home runs. That's not easy to do at any level. All we can do is shake our heads and wonder why he was claimed?

If Jimmy isn't the oldest infielder in the league in terms of actual age, he is by far the oldest in terms of his physical well-being. How many games did he miss with a strained muscle? 60?

Are we still trashing Ruben Amaro in these comments? Really? Given Cliff Lee's injuries this season, what would you rather have: Halladay, Lee, and Hamels for '10, or Halladay, Hamels and Oswalt for '10 and '11? In two seasons, every time the Phillies have needed Amaro to step up at the trading deadline to make a move that will put them in a position to go deep into the postseason, he's done it. He also traded for Halladay, picked up Wilson Valdez for nothing (imagine this season without him), signed Gload, Schneider and traded for Sweeney. He's not perfect: Juan Castro, bad move. Cliff Lee trade, not great, but *Lee was never going to re-sign here at the money for which the Phillies could afford him.* When's the last time the Phillies have had a GM who could pull off a major trade at the trading deadline twice? Never is the answer. Dick Ruthven and Bake McBride were good pickups for Paul Owens, but they aren't Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt. Ruben's a good GM. Is he a great one? We don't know yet. But I like the guy we have.

The Phils website says that carillo would not be joining the major league roster. Probably a minor league depth move for next year, they did that with some light hitting outfielder a couple of years ago they got from the Braves orgaization.
