Ruben Amaro Jr.'s long affiliation with the Phillies will continue through the 2015 season.

The Phillies will hold a 10 a.m. news conference Saturday to announce a four-year contract extension for their senior vice president and general manager. Amaro's current contract was set to expire after this season.

“Since becoming our general manager in November of 2008, Ruben has done an outstanding job,” team president David Montgomery said in a statement. "He has been an excellent leader for our baseball operations personnel, surrounding himself with a very capable staff which he uses very well. Ruben has shown great judgment in his player moves and enjoys a strong relationship with Charlie, our coaches and the players.”

Amaro, 46, had been a player's son, bat boy, player and assistant general manager before taking over from Pat Gillick as the team's GM following the 2008 season. The Phillies' 190-134 record during Amaro's first two years as the GM is the best in the National League and second best in baseball behind the New York Yankees.

You can read more about Amaro's contract extension in the Sunday Inquirer.

Well deserved. One would hope the Banner and Reid would take a page or two from RAJ's playbook on how to put together a championship team.

Kudos to RA, agree with beegal99 - the Birds certainly are not the cream of sports in Philly...

Yes, he deserves it. For one the Phillies have a GM who is not afraid to make the big move. I like the idea of him being a former player and son of a former player, which has allowed him to learn the game firsthand. It doesn't hurt that he has a nice degree from Stanford also.

I also agree that he has earned it. Would we not have said that same thing thouigh back when the Eagles were on the early rise? I fully agree with El Zorro that it is nice to have a leader that is not afraid to maked a big move. You never feel out of competititon for other FA's...

Great move. Probably Phills best GM. Unfortunately things beyond his control (Utleys problem) could determine ultimate success. When you consider Halladay, Lee, Oswalt. Polanco that leaves little for discussion about his capabilities. Amaro and Phills mgt took hits for not signing Lee a few years ago to 7 year contract. Thursday Phills faced Yanks Mark Prior. Prior 3-4 years ago was at Halladay-Lee level The last few years he has just been trying to make ML roster. Mets Santana also at that level now he's facing health questions. Mets who are in financial trouble owe him 23 mill. per for next 3-4 years Johan and the Mets have their fingers crossed for late June return but nothing certain. Giving a pitcher any pitcher 7 year contract is very risky. Lee would be 37-38 during last 2 years at over 20 mill per. Phills have Lee for next 5 years. Lee and the rest of rotation can be awesome. Kudos RA.

He seems to have certainly established himself as one of the more aggressive GMs in the game. But it's Spring 2011, the team is coming off a good 4-year run in which Wade and Gillick also had a role and not a game has yet been played on the season. I just wonder how many of these fanboys are going to be calling for Amaro's blood when the inevitable collapse and rebuilding process begins?

Mark Prior was never, ever at the Halladay, Lee level, except in his Playstation dreams......

Can't some of you ever post without referencing the freakin Eagles? There won't even be football for who-knows-how-long and they don't belong in the same sentence as the Phils. It's baseball season and we have a big-time team like the Yankees and Red Sox now.

@Mark1np - Prior was pretty damn good his second year, including finishing 3rd in the CY race. Additionally, 2.42 ERA, 1.1 WHIP, 6.2 WAR, and 243K/211IP are pretty damn impressive.

He's done a nice job convincing the owners that they needed to spend money on talent. Maybe a bit too much even. Now let's see if the squad he has assembled can bring the hardware back.

besides the Lee to Seattle hiccup, he's been on the money. plus he was born, raised, and played for Philly. Who else do you want to run the ship?

Kerry Wood and Mark Prior burst onto the scene, with great stuff and potential. But neither one held up for long and they never proved themselves on big stages the way Halladay and Lee have. To compare Prior even remotely to Halladay means you don't understand how special Halladay is.
