Amaro: Halladay 'in position' to make next start
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
The Phillies have not internally discussed a shutdown for Roy Halladay, who is "in position" to make his next start, Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday.
Amaro, the Phillies' GM, said all examinations of Halladay's shoulder and back have "seemed OK." He said Halladay, at this point, is scheduled to make his next start. That should come Thursday against Washington.
Halladay described his latest injury as "spasms" behind his shoulder. Amaro said it is "tightness in his mid-to-upper back."
"It's taken a little bit of a toll on him," Amaro said. "We'll talk to the doctors today or tomorrow to see if we're risking any injury."
Their initial belief is that Halladay could finish the season without harm. The 35-year-old pitcher is due $20 million in 2013 and expressed a strong desire to make his final two starts in 2012.
Still, Halladay appeared emotionally drained Saturday in addition to being physically limited. Is there an advantage to shutting him down now?
"We'll talk the doctors and see if there is benefit," Amaro said. "We haven't made any decisions any way or another."

Warbiscuit would give RAj a "G" if he could. Too funny. Grazman- The IDIOT Bizkit is just one of the clowns with no life and the overwhelming need to attempt devaluing anyone who's been more successful in life than he's been. That allows for a virtually unlimited range of whining and slamming for it.

The Phillies are desperate to finish the season .500 or above. Let's them spin things all winter to sell tickets. The silly, old fool in the dugout might pitch him 3 times over the next 9 games to make that happen. Wilhelm Von Humboldt- And, Willie Dimboldt is desperate to whine about ANYTHING!

It's almost impossible for it NOT to do harm. Look at it the other way, will it help him in anyway to continue pitching? By his next start, they will be officially out of the race, this is just an ego move on Amaro's part. Halladay has to say he wants to pitch, Amaro should be smarter than that. Strasburg is shut down and he's perfectly healthy. Barneyboy- Barneyboy: excellent point about Strasburg. Too often, the Phillies seem unwilling to stand up to their veterans. Halladay needs to be shut down, period. Whether he can even return to any kind of form next season is still a question mark as well. That right arm has thrown almost 2,700 innings in the Show with 66 complete games in an era when complete games are a rarity. There is absolutely no need to pitch him again this season.

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???? jabac
Really interesting to note the whining from the so-called fans isn't discernibly worse when there's a poor season than when they actually win it all.
GOOD GRIEF! BEMiller
Halladay has a performance clause based on innings pitched that if reached the option for 2014 will be exercised. I would no be calling Amaro arrogant, Barneyboy. Maybe he's giving Halladay a little more respect, by letting him decide. I would shut him down. This is not the first time during this run players have been playing hurt in meaningless games. Last year Pence and Chooch were playing hurt when the team already clinched homefield advantage. EL Zorro- Steven Strasburg has NOTHING to do with this, and the merits of shutting him down are absolutely debatable!
At the end of a season, the only players not playing hurt, to a lesser of not so lesser degree, are the ones who are injured to the degree they are unable to play at all! BEMiller
Keep pitching him. It's a real blast watching teams taking batting practice when Halladay's on the mound. end sarcasm here. Keep Lee and Hamels - trade Halladay next year. We only need two stud pitchers anyway. Look at all the World Series winners over the past decade or two. TWO, sometimes ONE ace on the squad. Jeffritoe
BEMiller - thanks for telling it like it is! Sometimes I'm ready to quit reading these blogs because it seems there is no one saying anything positive - reading the sameolsameol over and over again is like being in a dentist's chair nonstop. Then someone like you posts a beauty ("blithering bizkit of bellicosity?" - love it!). Thanks, dude! It just seems that these guys spend an inordinate amount of time reading about and watching the Phillies, only to go online and let Dr. Jekyll out. Why? Do they think someone is going to think they're a nerd if they say something good? Either you're a fan or you're not. dwp66- Appreciate the comment dwp66!
In all honesty, I've probably lived through more horrible Phillies seasons than most of the common taters on these pages--since 1948--and still manage to be able to keep a decent outlook on all of it.
In 1964, when I was in the army and in San Francisco, most of the national common taters in the sportshack business were conceding the National League to the Phillies. Gene Mauch took that challenge and scotched it.
Sad as that was, I took from it that it isn't over till the mathematics are figured!
Who knows, this season's Cardinalitos could return the favor done for them by the Phillie in '64. The Manila Folder is always a possibility! BEMiller
BEMillier, understand about players being sore at this time of the year. However, there is a big difference between playing with aches and pain than playing hurt or injured. There is also no need to play guys hurt when there are nothing to play for and risking further injury. Halladay has nothing in his FB and he can't command his other pitches. I would play Ruiz also as little as possible. He's too valuable as the only bonafide RH power bat to have him hurt comming into next season. EL Zorro
The Phillies made the playoffs 5 years in a row and won the World Series. They are still playing meaningful games.
Give Doc the ball if he wants it. Bill Manley
