Amaro: Halladay 'in position' to make next start
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff Writer
The Phillies have not internally discussed a shutdown for Roy Halladay, who is "in position" to make his next start, Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday.
Amaro, the Phillies' GM, said all examinations of Halladay's shoulder and back have "seemed OK." He said Halladay, at this point, is scheduled to make his next start. That should come Thursday against Washington.
Halladay described his latest injury as "spasms" behind his shoulder. Amaro said it is "tightness in his mid-to-upper back."
"It's taken a little bit of a toll on him," Amaro said. "We'll talk to the doctors today or tomorrow to see if we're risking any injury."
Their initial belief is that Halladay could finish the season without harm. The 35-year-old pitcher is due $20 million in 2013 and expressed a strong desire to make his final two starts in 2012.
Still, Halladay appeared emotionally drained Saturday in addition to being physically limited. Is there an advantage to shutting him down now?
"We'll talk the doctors and see if there is benefit," Amaro said. "We haven't made any decisions any way or another."
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
Colbert misses a start because of a belly ache with the wc race heating up and Halladay wants to pitch through spasms when the season's over. Professional, but short sighted. Close it down and ace it next year. TomO
Call it a season for Roy. What's to be gained by having him go out and stink it up a couple of more times? Edward L Norton
It cannot be a good thing for Halladay to be pitching now. He is not right. I don't know if he will ever be effective again, but if there is any chance of it, we could be ruining that chance by sending him out there hurt. Please shut him down. And also, don't send the hot relief pitcher out there day after day until his arm falls off. Why is Papelbon pitching in all these non-save operations? These guys are not robots! A decent pitcher is very hard to replace! altoonaaslan
Warbiscuit's name should be Wartaint jamarder
@Bemiller --I didn't give Lee an A; I was generous to Amaro and gave Amaro an A for his acquisition of Lee in 2009 from Cleveland for prospects, none of whom have really panned out -- as Lee was terrific in 2009 and took Phils to World Series and single-handedly won 2 World Series games for Phils (what he did in 2010 World Series is irelevant for this purpose); I then gave Amaro a generous B for his signing of Lee for $120 million in 2010, considering that Lee was top 4 in 2010 Cy Young and is still top 10 starter this yr (11th in era, 7th in k's)..Funny t be attacked as too egenrous to Amaro; I gave the acquision of Halladay only a B+ because Rube gave much more in value in prospects and it appear that Halladay had only 2 good years to give Phils -the grades are not only considering the quality of the player but the cost in money or prospects --something lost on brainless fools like Rube and you (and that's why the Oswalt and Pence deals are clearly F's as Phils gave up top prospects for short-term rentals that were not worth it) warbiscuit
warbiscuit, while I actually agree with some of your grades, some of them are just silly. Do you understand what a rule 5 guy is? He's a player that the other team didn't bother to protect on their 40 man roster, you can keep him or just let the other team have him back after spring training for the price of the waiver claim. Once in a while you'll hit on a gem like Victorino, but mostly these are mid level minor league ball players. Anything they get out of Herndon or Martinez is a bonus, mostly you're just giving yourself a chance to look at a guy your scouts like. The only guy that can get a "F" is a guy that didn't protect a guy like Victorino, for the team that acquires him as the 25th man on the roster it can only be a positive. And Raul was not an "F" , if nothing else, getting about 30 RBI this year from LF should have taught you that. drbob1
by the same token, I didn't give Howard an F --as he has been at least a C and may improve to B (or could fall to D) (and I'm stil a big fan of Ryan and hope he can once again carry a team as he was able to do at times in 2005-2009) --but I gave Rube an F for this ludicrous contract extension and a costly $125 mil blunder-one of the worst contracts in histroy and unnecessary since Howard was still under contract for 2 years when signed - right now Howard isn't worth much more than a platooning DH (Ibanez gets $1.1 million) warbiscuit
@regassart --what brainless fools like you and Rube dont understand is that it's not whether the player has any value but their relative value for the price paid--wasting $18 million on a third baseman with ZERO offensive prodcuton for 3 yrs has been a disaster; wasting $36 million for 2 good months of Ibanez was awful, wasting $50 million on a closer with a propensoity to lose big games has been awful, etc --that's why all these deals rank a D or F --not because the players are so awful but the deals were so awful warbiscuit
@drbob ---yes Rube gets F's for insisting on wasting roster spots on Herndon and Martinez for all of 2010 and 2011 respectively --as they were awful and the roster spots would have been better used on bona fide major league quality players warbiscuit
and yes rube gets F's for Thome, Wigginton, Nix, etc becuase they were the WRONG players --not what the Phils needed and not the kind of players a qualified g.m. would have added to this team warbiscuit
in 2010 Lee was top 4 in Cy Young voting and could have won 20 games with better bullpen and offensive support, led league in shutouts and was among leaders in k's and era;
in 2011 Lee has pitched:
16 excellent games in which he allowed 0, 1 or 2 earned runs (including last 7 straight);
another 3 "quality starts" with 3 earned runs;
another 4 "so-so" efforts with 4 runs;
3 "bad" games in which he gave up 5 but went 7 innings (one of which Phls won) and
2 "real bad" games in which he gave up 6 runs (and in some of his so-so and bad games he should have been removed earlier had Chollie had a decent bullpen)...
thus, he should have AT LEAST 16 wins, probably 18, and with a little luck on a good team like Yanks or Texas could have actually been a 20-game winner...
in 11 post-season starts his team has won 8 times and lost 3 and he has generally been brilliant in all 8 wins warbiscuit
@drbob --yes I'm still a big Ibanez fan --Phils could have sure used his production for $1 to 2 million/yr --but the $36 million 3/yr contract given to him rates an F - again it''s not whether the player has any value but the cost and the roster spot given to him..Ibanez has value as a platooning d.h not as a $12mil./yr everyday left-fielder warbiscuit
Hey any of you guys watch Boardwalk Empire last night? Mystified
Are the PHILLIES "BIGWIGS" Crazy? There is something wrong with Doc. What are they trying to prove? Warbiscuit's comments are RIGHT ON! cleusner
in summary, I was trying to grade Amaro's performance in making these acquisitions, contracts and trades, not the value of the players...
also I could go on and grade Amaro's errors of omission, e.g. failure to have a better no. 2 starter than Pedro in 2009 post-season (F), failure to have a closer with an era under 7.0 for 2009 post-season (F), failure to have a decent offense, bench or bullpen in 2010 (F), failure to improve offense and bench for 2011 post-season (F), failure to improve offense and bullpen for 2012 (F), etc warbiscuit
