Amaro: Halladay 'in position' to make next start

POSTED: Monday, September 24, 2012, 1:57 PM
Roy Halladay couldn't make it out of the second inning in his last start. (Al Behrman/AP)

The Phillies have not internally discussed a shutdown for Roy Halladay, who is "in position" to make his next start, Ruben Amaro Jr. said Monday.

Amaro, the Phillies' GM, said all examinations of Halladay's shoulder and back have "seemed OK." He said Halladay, at this point, is scheduled to make his next start. That should come Thursday against Washington.

Halladay described his latest injury as "spasms" behind his shoulder. Amaro said it is "tightness in his mid-to-upper back."

"It's taken a little bit of a toll on him," Amaro said. "We'll talk to the doctors today or tomorrow to see if we're risking any injury."

Their initial belief is that Halladay could finish the season without harm. The 35-year-old pitcher is due $20 million in 2013 and expressed a strong desire to make his final two starts in 2012.

Still, Halladay appeared emotionally drained Saturday in addition to being physically limited. Is there an advantage to shutting him down now?

"We'll talk the doctors and see if there is benefit," Amaro said. "We haven't made any decisions any way or another."

Why is it IDIOTS as the blithering bizkit of bellicosity keep giving Cliff Lee such a pass? He's certainly NOT an A simply because he is even more inconsistent than is Kyle Kendrick, and he was horrible in that World Series! Cliff Lee is a B-, and on a stretch a B. Juan Pierre on a cost/productive basis is an A, perhaps A+. Kyle Kendrick over the past two months has been quite consistent and quite good. At this point he's a C+/B-. Jonathan Papelbon has been no worse than a B, more likely a B+. BTW, when he plays as he still can, Jimmy Rollins is still a B-/B. He's still better than, likely, 20 shortstops in MLB.
The only surprise here is the blithering biz would give anything more than and F. Ryan Howard is, similarly, ahead of about 2/3 of the MLB first basemen, and if injury keeps him from returning to what he has been in the past, that's unforeseeable consequents, NOT bad judgement. Also, Aramis Ramirez was most likely not signed by RAJ since he wasn't signing to come to Philly. On the other hand, Laynce Nix has been a surprise for me, and rates at least a D, maybe a D+. What with the commentaries that usually run on these "pages" that's not too hard to figure! Obviously, I do understand that the IDIOT Bizkit is out to trash everything Phillies that it can, so there it is.

That Cliff Lee is yoour primary argument is utterly strange, almost as bad as your daily stalking of Laynce Nix before he ever had an at bat for the Phillies this season..>Concerning Aramis Ramirez, the Phillies DID pursue him, as they WERE shopping Polanco around the league to no avail...When J Roll got no heavy action and it was apparent he was going to be re-signed, RAJ elected not to go overboard with the money, thus Ramirez was free to sign a very workable deal as an elite run producer for the Brewers....Although he's "flunk happy", Warbiscuit's assertions are not idiotic, just a little rough.

Must say I agree with most of this. Except I would put Pierre as an A- or even an A. I would also put the lee signing as C+ or B- (he's on a quick decline IMO, even with his recent improvement)

Why keep Haliday pitching this year, shut him down now, get a full work up in a couple weeks and get ready for next year. I don't want to see a situation where he needs a shoulder operation in the off season. Sometimes you need to make the decision for the player. Sorry guys even though I purchased playoff tickets, neither of us are going as phillies.

The reason to shut Doc Halladay down is that he CAN'T go out and pitch! If he can pitch, he should pitch since the Phillies, despite all the whining on these "pages" HAVE NOT BEEN ELIMINATED. No matter how obvious it seems to all the Philadelphia boo boo birdies and malcontents that will happen, IT HASN'T HAPPENED! Even if we take that they must win a minimum of eight of the last nine to have a chance, THEY STILL HAVE A CHANCE.
Why is it so easy for the Philly boo boo birdies and malcontents to quit?
Someone, somewhere, on some commentary page or something asserted that with the way Philly boo boo birdies and malcontents whine and moan they don't deserve winning anything. From time to time I am pressed to disagree with that assessment of things!
    GOOD GRIEF!

Let's see where you're wrong biscuit:
Ibanez-carried team in first half of 1st season; alternative was Pat Burrell

Polanco-filled defensive hole and added contact hitter to K-ridden lineup.

Pence-overpaid and not worth 2013 Arbitration $. The mistake was the haul given up for him, not cutting bait and moving him this year.

Thome-cost nothing, was worth the shot in symbolic goodwill alone.

Wiggington-He has done well with what HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO. BE a RH bat off the bench. He was never supposed to have to play 3B.

Nix-was hurt alot. Hit when he was in Wash. 20/20 hindsight troll.

Papelbon-has been very good. Hard to complain since his money didn't prevent any other signing.

Rollins- JJ Hardy is hitting .220. Reyes was 3 times the cost and has worse #'s than JRoll. He can still field at a premium level. You're wrong.

Blantons deal-Like it or not, that is what 4/5 starters make now. We can debate the merits of that all we want, but he got a market deal. And the guy was a key in winning it all in 2008. No complaints.

    Kendrick-has evolved into a decent 5th starter.

Like most of this, regassert6, but disagree about the part on Laynce Nix. He's like a .258 career hitter, with little power, and a butcher's skills in the field. Even still, I did give him a D/C-.
On the Jimmy Rollins front, of course everyone was upset when he showed a lack of hustle a couple of times this year, but he's still much better than at least 2/3 of the shortstops in MLB.
Hunter Pence, being no more than a complementary player, wilted without the protection of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the lineup.
Jim Thome, at the price, was no gamble at all and well worth it if he'd been able to work out.
The glaring error of it all is giving such short shrift to Raul Ibanez, who for a decent contract would have well been worth signing. He was really quite good the first year, and a little less the second. In the third year, he ABSOLUTELY carried the time for at least two stretches. Kyle Kendrick, over the past two months or so, has been quite consistent an really pretty darn good. If he were able to pitch at the past two months level in the future, he's a fourth starter, even a third depending where he is.

They obviously believe his arm won't fall off. Bravo! Let's just use up his arm so next year it falls off. Hell it's only $20,000,000 a year. Amaro should get hi monies worth. lol

    regassert6, you missed these:

Lee to Seattle for Aumont and other prospects: that's an incomplete so far.

Hearndon & Martinez, well hard to make that an F considering what they gave up to get them.

Willis? He got paid 0 dollars. He got cut in spring training. I'd say a B at worst. It was taking a chance with 0 downside. If he performed, like Pierre, awesome, if not, no sweat.

Tell halladay to take a rest the rest of September, then go back to his exercise program third week of October. He will be better next year. He is good for 2014 with optin to 2015 contingent upon 2013 performance.

He never really recovered from the injury. That's clear. Shut him down. The season is kaputski anyway. Get him some rest & rehab over the winter and see if he can come back. The guy is too good to force into another injury. Get Utley going at third and try Frandsen at second. Too many injuries killed this season. Let's not add to it now.

Yeah, ask the doctor about additional harm. Just make sure is not the same one that let Utley play with a bad hip and bad knees. Unbelievable. Shut him down before it's too late, or is it already?

The Thome deal is already an A IMO, because RAJ was able to trade him, who had no place in the roster, to the Orioles for two prospects, one of them Kyle Simon, who was lights out in Clearwater and Reading and Gabe Lino, a very young catcher with upside. Simon and Ethan Martin (Victorino trade) should be in the top 5 pitching prospects in the organization with Pettibone, Biddle and Morgan, IMO, bypassing Trevor May and Julio Rodriguez.

Good to see the ripostes to the listing of grades by our favorite poster. As for Halladay, makes NO sense to pitch him any further this season in games that mean NOTHING. Season ticket holders like myself do not care if the Phillies win some of these meaningless games; they care about the offseason moves coming up.
