Temperature at first pitch was a cool 96 degrees. I'm thankful for the shade in the press box today.
Here's some quick hits as the Phillies go for the interleague sweep against Cleveland...
ROLLINS SITS
Yes, Jimmy Rollins had the day off after his walk-off home run Wednesday night. It's a designed day of rest for Rollins. The team sees no sense in pushing the shortstop in the first two weeks he's back. They will be cautious of day games after night games. Rollins could have another day off Sunday.
Back to the home run: According to the Elias Sports Bureau, before Wednesday, Rollins had the second-most career home runs (148) without a walk-off in his career. Only Mark Teixeira (254) has more without a walk-off now.
GETTIN' FIGGY WIT IT (AGAIN)
As expected, righthander Chad Durbin was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. To replace Durbin, the Phillies called righthander Nelson Figueroa up from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Figueroa remained in the organization after being designated for assignment three weeks ago. He pitched well as a starter at triple A and the Phillies summoned Figueroa to be their long man. Figueroa said the opportunity to pitch on a regular basis helped him.
He was 3-0 with a 0.95 ERA for Lehigh Valley.
When he was designated, Figueroa said he thought there was a chance Arizona picked him up (Figueroa currently lives in Chandler, Ariz.) but he passed through waivers and decided it was best to accept a minor-league assignment with the Phillies.
"It's hard to turn your back on an organization that's given you a chance," Figueroa said.
The move puts the Phillies at 39 on their 40-man roster.
RUIZ FEELING BETTER
The only thing Carlos Ruiz remembers from last Friday night was the sound of the broken bat hitting his head. After that, it's all a blur.
"I felt like I wanted to throw up," said Ruiz, who suffered a minor concussion.
But the catcher is improving. He swung off a tee on Thursday and plans to take batting practice for the first time Friday. Ruiz is eligible to come off the disabled list on July 4 and said he expects to be ready by then.
"Right now I feel real good," Ruiz said. "I don't feel dizzy."
Dane Sardinha earned his first start as a Phillie on Thursday afternoon, providing Brian Schneider with some rest.
