Achy Pedro: "Not too good"

POSTED: Sunday, September 20, 2009, 1:50 PM

Pedro Martinez rode a stationary bicycle for about 40 minutes this morning, walked to his locker and rubbed his neck.

Not too good.,’ he said. “I feel it in the back (of the neck), it shoots to the right side."

Martinez injured his neck swinging and missing in the second inning of Saturday’s loss, which he left after throwing one warm-up pitch before the fourth. “I didn’t sleep very well last night,” he said, grimacing while rubbing the afflicted area.

Martinez said he expected to see a chiropractor in Miami, where the team travels tonight. Asked if he might miss his next start, he said, “Thank God for that day off (tomorrow),” which seemed to imply that four days of rest might be iffy but the extra day provided by the schedule might be sufficient.

That start would come Friday in Milwaukee, and Martinez remained cagey when asked about his status for it. “I think it’s going to be great,” he said of Friday. “Day before Saturday!”

Richie Allen, what are you smoking? Still looking for the shooter in the Grassy Knoll? Yes, it is possible that Myers is being denied a chance to win a new contract. Or, it could be that Charlie was so desperate for a closer that he overused Myers to get him ready to close too quickly. In the event, I am amazed at all that Brett was able to come back this year. I imagine he feels that he could close for the Phils and help them secure a second ring in a row. Is Don Carmen still available?

Yes, but consider these two "injuries" to Happ and Martinez. Both occurred while batting. But, that's what it means to play baseball unlike what they do in the American League. If there's any consolation, should the Phils make it to the big game, they will have the DH four times if needed. That should help some of the pitchers. But, let Cliff Lee and Joe Blanton swing bats.

catnameddomino: I fail to see how throwing 130+ pitches is responsible for Pedro hurting his neck while swinging a bat. Why not read an article, before spouting at the mouth? I love all these Charlie haters. I guess they were on a different planet last year when we won the World F*ing Championship with Charlie as the manager

And it doesn't make sense as I pointed out elsewhere. Won't do it again.

GREAT GOING PHILLIES! MAY I SUGGEST something to the Phillies? Thanks you. Far too many times Brad allows a baserunner to get on. The Phis may be one or two runs up. Coaching allows the BASERUNNER to steal second base. This situation has come up many times for Brad and the Phils. This runner seeeems to be scoring off of Lidge of late...ooops...all year! By allowing the baserunner to STEAL TAKES YOU OUT OF A FORCE PLAY and even a DOUBLE PLAY possibility. STOP with: "We want him to concentrate on the batter." DAH! The baserunner is now in scoring position, after the steal. His steal and possible run CAN be another motivation for the other team. It also TAKES you out of a FORCE PLAY!!!! In my baseball world. The baserunner on FIRST is only part of my strategy to GET OUT OF AN INNING. If they hit the ground ball, which Lidge does do, that ground ball is a possible force play or double play.

From what I've read, Myers has a shoulder stiffness. He has not been used for over a week due to that. he is going to be checked out this week by a doctor. Charlie is wary about him now.. Having to go to Walker, Durbin and Escalona in a crucial series said all you need to know..The Phillies have a banged up staff and it needs rest. Its is hopeful that at least one lefty between Romero and Eyre can return and pitch effectively. Park may also be ready by the 1st round playoffs. Thank god the division is almost wrapped up.

I do not think the 130 pitches were the problem, Pedro had a smooth first inning, the trouble started after the at-bat that he twisted his neck on. Report on line now saying Myers has a possible strain in back of pitching shoulder.

Happ is fine, won't miss a start. Myers pitched too many games when he came back and now has a shoulder strain.

Happ, and now Pedro...the pitchers shouldn't swing a bat at all from here on in. The playoffs are too close to fully recover from silly strains. Take the out, move on.

Joeolive...somebody {Charlie} doesn't like something about Myers. Maybe his attitude. Also, Phils could be playing with fire keeping Myers from showing his stuff at the end of his contract year. Maybe they think by doing that they can sign him cheap next year as nobody else would want to gamble big bucks. Who knows, but it doesn't smell right. They might end up needing him to do long relief in the playoffs the way things are going with injuries. He should not be sitting around getting rusty.

What is the status of Myers? Is he hurt, or has there not been the need to use him? He hasnt pitched since Sep 12.

I thought the Phillies were pushing it when they let Pedro get up to nearly 130 pitches. They guy has been hurt regularly the past few seasons, so it wasn't that smart to expect him to avoid injuries this year as well. With Happ also hurting, it looks like the Phillies may be forced to turn to Moyer as the 4th starter in the playoffs since I can't see any way they use a 3 man rotation.
