Utley Maintains All-Star Lead

POSTED: Tuesday, June 10, 2008, 1:45 PM

Chase Utley remains the leader in votes for NL players in the All-Star Game.

Utley has 1,284,961 votes to put him in a commanding lead over Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa, who is second with 589,637 votes. But Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones is close behind Utley for top vote getter with 1,110,171 votes.

Ryan Howard (368,012) remains a distant fourth behind Houston Astros first baseman Lance Berkman (1,046,249). Jimmy Rollins (442,885) remains a distant fifth behind Houston shortstop Miguel Tejada (726,835). And Pat Burrell (487,131) has dropped from sixth to ninth amongst NL outfielders.

I'd like to think the All Star Game is not just a popularity contest. I voted on-line for the players with the best numbers. Not just because they were Phillies. And maybe I wasn't paying much attention last year, but I don't remember any player getting over a million votes! This year, several players have.

I have to side with Truth (who woulda thunk it?) and Bryan, they are both right. Voting on line 25 times is just as easy as filling them out at the park. I was at 4 of the 10 games and the club does a terrible job of making it a priority to vote and collect the ballots. 400K votes for Rollins is a disgrace, if every fan at the park would have voted for him during the homestand, he would have almost that many votes. I voted for him partly because I thought he got screwed last year and I still think he's the best ss. C'mon Philly fans, go on line and let's get him up where he belongs.

Don't forget to write in Chris Coste for all-star catcher. Even if he doesn't make it, it would be cool to get noticed.

On-line voting aside, Bryan's point is a valid one...if there are 40,000 people in the stadium, and a percentage of them are filling out a ballot, it is incumbent upon the club (i.e. ushers) to do everything in their power to make sure those ballots get counted. The traditional way this is done is to hand them out, and walk up and down the aisles in 2 or 3 different innings collecting them. The first time, some are collected and some people are reminded to do fill them out so they are collected the next inning, and so on. Only collecting them once, or not collecting them at all during a game on a 10 game homestand could result in anywhere from tens to hundreds of thousands less votes from the Phillie faithful.

The Phils are rolling. If they can finish the rest of June playing .500 ball against all those tough teams (I assume the rest of the NL east has to play those teams) then the race for the NL east will be over by the 4th of July. If Howard finally comes out of his slump (even though he's getting his rbi's & some homers he's not his terrifying self) and Rollins gets going and in other words, if the offense is clicking on all cylinders, the Phils could win every series in June and have about the best record in baseball. Maybe Gillick can work his magic again and pick up a situational left handed reliever Manuel can use in the 5th and 6th inning. Another thing I'd like to see is Benson get well and apply pressure on Kendrick or be available in case someone breaks down. It looks like Myers is back on track and if that's the case, wow, the Phils will be very tough to get thru. Should Benson not be available I'd like to see Carrosco or Savery come up if one of their starters breaks down. I just don't have a lot of faith in Kendrick. He was wild and couldn't keep the ball down in Atlanta. But, man, does he have guts. He just keeps hanging on and often gets key outs when he needs them. That can't be taught. I hope he can keep hanging but I don't have a lot of faith he will.
