You have to wonder if Kris Benson is ever going to pitch for the Phillies.

He was scratched from tonight's start for single-A Clearwater because of tightness and soreness in his right biceps. Benson had to be shut down in spring training because of tendinitis in his right biceps. Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he doesn't think it's the same injury as before.

"But it's a concern enough for him not to pitch," Amaro said. "He didn't feel comfortable pitching. He kind of tested it this morning and didn't feel comfortable posting up and pitching tonight. We're concerned about it. We obviously don't like it. We'd like to have him pitch consistently and be healthy, but we'll stay with him for now and see how he progresses. We need to get him back on the mound so we can evaluate him."

I just don't understand what causes some pitchers to go into this continuous spiral of injury. We've seen it with Mike Hampton, Mark Prior, and a host of other athletes. Is it mechanical problems never corrected? Is it bad habits in the weight room or not doing enough to stay in shape? We've gone from an era where teams would carry 3 pitchers to where we now baby pitchers with pitch counts, 5 days rest, and lower expectations of how long an arm should last without surgical enhancement. You would think of playing this sport for over 100 years, we would have gotten better at pitching.

Chase Utley....."You ARE the man!!!" Not sure the last time he had a 3 hit game. And two great defensive catches! If he hits a HR tomorrow, he'll set a new club record for HR's in consecutive games. He's twice tied the record at 5. Held by Mike Schmidt.

Well, I guess it is a good thing that Eaton stepped up his game in 2008.

Great game last night! It's much sweeter to come out on top of those one-run games. Votto probably had nightmares about Chase last night. It's good to see Pedro NOT swinging at the first pitch he sees. Now if he could just stay back on that outside breaking stuff. The pen did another stellar job of shutting down the opposition, aside from the meatball Chad threw to Dunn. Lidge is definitely back. Lock'em up ASAP, so that Brett can immerse himself mentally into his starter's role. Is it possible for Brett to summon some of last year's "closer mentality" in the 1st inning?..you know, so that he can burn off some of his pent-up energy? Or will that take too much gas out of the tank and prevent him from going real deep into games?

I didn't even mind Chase being out at the plate. The way he barreled over the catcher just shows what a *gamer* he is! And Steve Smith has GOT to stop putting up the stop sign after he's waved a runner on. Chase was safer plowing into the catcher than if he had tried to put on the brakes.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
