Howard Goes Yard

POSTED: Saturday, April 26, 2008, 7:16 PM

Ryan Howard hit a two-run home run to center field in the top of the first inning tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

It's the first homer of his career against the Pirates, the only team he had played against but hadn't homered against. Charlie Manuel had benched Howard the last two games, although Howard went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts in pinch-hit and substitution situations.

Its one HR one game. At least let him go on a true roll before b4 YOU bloggers hop on the MVP, ROY, RBI king, HR king etc bandwagon.

Why is Charlie tryin to push the limits of these starters? Kendrick should have been pinch hit for and taken out in the top of the 8th. He rarely pitches into the 8th, so why push it. Take your seven solid innings and hand it over to the pen!!!

YOU are such a wierdo truth! Todd is the one writing the headline about Howards homer and NOBODY is praising Howard in these posts. Howard still struck out twice, and so did Utley! 1-4 with a HR and 2 K's is a typical Howard night...yippeeee now 2-4 is a different story......

Howard goes K...twice more...unless he hits 100 HRs to make up for the 200 Ks, he's not worth the money....

Great to see Kendrick go 8 innings :-) How Rudy giving up his first hit? Bull pen has been really surprising so far.

And Karen, Kendrick only went 7 innings. He didnt get an out in the 8th, so technically he only pitched 7.

Don't worry, Truth - you and I both know Howard will be back to his flailing ways tomorrow. A roll isn't consistently striking out 40% of the time you come to the plate.

Hey Clinton, NJ.......I guess I DID bring Kendrick luck! LOL! And I think Ramon Henderson should leave the bullpen and coach 3rd. He's much more aggressive than Steve Smith. With positive results!

Well I was hopeful he would use the home run as some momentum, but then he proceded to strike out his next two at bats and I remembered there is our 10 million dollar strikeout.

Smith took a few days off to attend his daughter's college graduation. Speaking of base coaches......Davey Lopes is hoping to return by the end of the month.

How great is it that we have two guys ripping up the league in offensive statistics, in Utley and Burrell, and they still get pushed to the third page behind the overachieving Flyers and Sixers. What a great time to be a Philadelphian. Now if the Eagles would just draft someone that we have heard of...

I rather see Howard work on his 'hitting' game, and get on base more. Homeruns draw applause but base hits wins ballgames. Anytime Howard gets a hit is good news though.

If Kendrick and Howard turn it around and the Phillies get Rollins and Victorino back and they are 100%, this team may be the best they have put on the field in 30 years.

wiseoldowl is right. Howard will be fine. Yeah he strikes out...So what? What's wrong with .280 50hr 140rbi 180K's? The man drives in runs and that's all that matters...

What's wrong is fundamentals. Being totally one-dimensionsal. It speaks to a lack of skill on a consistent basis. No one else before him has struck out as much as he has... so maybe he's not as great as he thinks he is.
