Phils send Bonilla and Lindblom to Texas for Young
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
UPDATE: Baseball sources have confirmed that the Phillies have completed the trade that will bring Michael Young to Philadelphia as the team's primary third baseman.
The Rangers will pay $10 million of Young's $16 million contract for the 2013 season and get relievers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla in return.
Read more about the trade in Sunday's Inquirer.
The deal that would bring Michael Young to the Phillies as their primary third baseman moved a step closer to completion Saturday when he informed officials from the Texas Rangers that he'd accept the trade.
Young, who has spent his entire big-league career in Texas, had the right to reject the trade because he has spent 10 years in the big leagues, including five with the same team.
Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported Young's decision on Twitter, but noted that financial details between the Phillies and Rangers still needed to be completed before the trade was finalized. A baseball source confirmed Young's decision.
Young, 36, will be entering the final year of a five-year contract that will pay him $16 million in 2013. Speculation has been that the Rangers will agree to eat about $8 million.
No details have surfaced about what the Rangers will get in return from the Phillies. A Dallas Morning News story Wednesday night indicated Texas was looking for a young reliever with big-league experience and a low-level prospect.
The Phillies have a long list of young relievers with a modicum of big-league experience, thanks in part to all the auditions they conducted last season. That list includes Michael Schwimer, Jake Diekman, Jeremy Horst, Justin De Fratus, Phillippe Aumont, Josh Lindblom, Michael Stutes and B.J. Rosenberg. Schwimer is the reliever they'd be most willing to trade.

Really nice one year stop gap until Asche is ready (hopefully)...compared to the available 3B options, this is one of the better ones...also a decent trade chip to a contender if the Phil's fail to make the postseason for a second year...now sign Polanco for 1 or 2 million on a one year deal to give Utley a spell at 2B or 3B and pinch hitting. michael2_19030
good pick up. should fit in well with the team. why not bring his teammate Josh Hamilton on board to ease the transition?:-) utley's salary will be gone next year and we will need to replace his bat. phils should go over the cap now and make sure they have two power hitters in howard and hamilton to help the aces get to the promised land. pick up a veteran starter for the five spot until the kids are ready to take the spot. and trade for or sign a solid 8th inning guy like Villenueva. high water
Here is what MLBTraderumors.com is posting:
The Phillies have acquired Michael Young from the Rangers according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today (Twitter links). Young will receive $1.2MM in benefits in exchange for waiving his no-trade clause, but Nightengale says (on Twitter) he told the Phillies he did not want an extension.
The Rangers have agreed to pay $10MM of the $16MM owed to Young next season, reports Nightengale (on Twitter). Earlier today Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reported that Josh Lindblom and minor leaguer Lisalverto Bonilla would head to Texas in the trade, which MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan has confirmed.

L Bonillla and homerun Lindbomb go in the trade, and that's another bonus -- great trade!
Bonilla has lots of promise when he broke his finger goofing around in the futures all star game while in AA and missed half the season. Promising, but more important we kept Defreatus Aumont Horst and Diekman.

sell or trade howard Lew Klein
Send Mr. LongBall himself, Josh Lindblom tedsupreme
swisher on a 4 year deal is next SyddBarrett- HighWater: I'd love to learn the backstory here, how much influence C Lee had in Young's decision. You gotta believe Young reached out to Lee, and Lee said "yeah, come." And I don't think it's 'pie-in-the-sky' that Phils could be a mystery-team in the Hamilton talks. Hamilton shouldn't be happy enough w/ only option to leaving Texas being the Mariners. But with a contender that he's got buddies with? ... Now that's a more likeable possibility for him.
Good....Young hit a great .321 against lefties, so he can also give Utley and Howard a day off against lefties.. jim35
If this pans out, we get a serviceable third baseman with a great dugout presence, a legitimate lead off hitter who can play centerfield like Maddox or Ashburn. What could go wrong? Jimmy Rollins pouting about moving to 2nd in the lineup. Jimmy, as fine a player as he is, is a Cancer in a Clubhouse that needs Positive Energy. Joe Nickels- Welcome Ben Midnight-Rider Revere! Welcome Michael The-Kid Young! (Congrats Shane, congrats Bubba-Joe)
An OK solution for 1 year. Let's hope Asche can be the future solution. MDefl
You can bang on Rollins about a lot of stuff, but he is not a cancer in the locker room. He is a leader whom the other players respect even if the fans do not. he brings a winnig attitude. It was Rollins who set the tone in the locker room in the WS years and brought the idea that the team should expect to win. UncleStosh- Thanks, Stosh. I get really tired of frustrated fans taking it out on JRoll, a solid player who in years to come will be seen as the best SS this franchise ever had. As for the M. Young trade, I'm ecstatic at getting a decent guy at 3rd in exchange for pitching dreck. Now for Swisher or Hamilton or whomever else in the OF...
- That's the problem. Rollins is a leader and Charlie let him get away with not playing hard that some of the others players where thinking the same thing. The real leaders are Chase & Ryan. The team played better with them in the line-up regardless of the BA. Chase never dogs and Ryan played as hard as he could. Rollins was afraid of hurting himself yet again. J-Roll needs some better training methods as most of the Phils need as evident by the muscle injuries the past few years.

I love this move. In 2010 when he played a full year at 3rd he played it fairly well. Have seen this guy play lots and he can flat out hit the ball, an rbi guy , 10-15 HRs max. Would not surprise me to see him hit 300-310 this year. Now lets go get Ross or Swisher in RF. Really would love to see Charlie restructure the lineup as follows : Revere, Utley, Young, Howard, Ross/Swisher, Jroll, Ruf, Chooch/Kratz. That is a very nice lineup with balance, speed and a TON of pop. This team will very good this year! philsfan in the atx
I am ready.... Play Ball! sillybilly
JR should go coach his African little league team. Put Freddy at SS and ship JR out. He is as lazy a player that I have ever seen. mainstreet
getting a broken bat for lindbloom is a good deal stayoutofphilly
The Phils and the city are lucky to get him!
Quality guy, on and off the field. mmds
Another Polanco failing...a band aid to cover until Cody Asche is given another year of seasoning at Reading/Lehigh Valley. Expensive addition, and yet will he still be playing in a sense for Texas? Fortunately they are not directly on the schedule...we play all Central division teams in the AL interleague schedule...'cept those unwanted Red Sox. So I suppose one can't pin collusion or light play on him. But he'll retire after one more season. He'll be on a Philly vacation.
Expect 2013 to be a lame duck season, no matter what anyone says. It is being setup for the future under the Sandberg era...hold me to it. ocpizza
We get a legit MLB pure hitter. Someone who will not waste AB's....you can plug him in the 3-5-6 hole and feel good. If he can hit.290 plus....play average defense...be a clubhouse presence then this trade is simply a steal because it fills big needs.... bbrady25
MAZELTOV!
Lindbloom is a stiff and Bonilla has a chance, but so does everyone else the Phillies trade. Young will have the adrenaline rush needed for one final magnificent season as he heads for the scrap pile. Bet on it! One more guy who can hit a few over fences, someone who won't throw it away in the 8th inning and another decent starter or 2 to keep Cloyd and hopefully Kendrick off the mound. Happy Hanukkah, Rube. Thanks for the gift. gentian
Cant wait for the article from national press that the Phils have given up too much on this as well. Great deal for the Phils. They still need another bat, but with the money they saved on the Revere deal you have to believe somthing is in the works. Philalawyer
Would you rather have M. Young for a year at 6 mil or Youkilis at 12 mil? good job rube. blaqjaq
UncleStosh you are right about Rollins. Its just what they do hit on Rollins. Rollins no longer among elite NL players but still a valuable piece due to his glove. How could Amaro trade Bonilla? Don w
@Don: Rollins is a Gold Glove SS who was in top 4 in the NL for runs scored. That is why you bat a guy lead-off, because he can score. Even when the 3 and 4 hitter missed half they year, he still scored over 100. He has the speed and instincts that not many have on the basepath. Paul SoTX
Paul Sotx perhaps my blog was not clear. I wanted Phills to resign Rollins and see him as a plus for Phills. I dont see him as a strong leadoff guy but a decent one. Perhaps the day of the 360 OBP is behind us. Still I applaud your positive post as opposed to those who are just negative all the time. Don w
