The Phillies placed Rule 5 pick Travis Blackley on waivers and reassigned lefthander Vic Darensbourg and righthander Gary Knotts to minor-league camp.

That leaves 27 healthy players in camp:

Pitchers (11): Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Kyle Kendrick, Adam Eaton, Tom Gordon, J.C. Romero, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, Clay Condrey and J.D. Durbin.
Catchers (2): Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste.
Infielders (8): Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Pedro Feliz, Greg Dobbs, Eric Bruntlett, Wes Helms and Ray Olmedo.
Outfielders (6): Pat Burrell, Shane Victorino, Geoff Jenkins, Jayson Werth, So Taguchi and Chris Snelling.

The Phillies have just 11 pitchers in camp, which leads me to believe they feel they can find more pitching help before the season starts. Because right now the Phillies have J.D. Durbin as their 11th pitcher. He is 0-4 with a 12.33 ERA. He has allowed eight homers in 15 1/3 innings, so it's tought to imagine the Phillies are comfortable having 11 pitchers -- one fewer than they probably would prefer -- especially if Durbin is that 11th man.

Lefthander Mike Zagurski likely needs Tommy John surgery. He injured his left elbow the other day throwing in a minor-league game.

I don't see Helms, Olmedo or J.D. Durbin making this team. Hopefully, moving Lidge to the DL was to keep a space for Helms so we can trade him and not eat his contract. I can't find anywhere if Olmedo has any options left. Plus we will need a spot for Benson soon (I hope).

I thought Helms would be long gone by now. I read a few days ago that they sneaked/snuck him through waivers. Its starting to look like they'll have to just let him go eventually which is probably what the Giants are waiting for.

Truth
Pitching is the name of the game. The Phillies continued short sightedness will once again cost them big time. Only this mgmt could waste an Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels core....

And their area of being shortsighted was what? Not getting Santana? Loshe? If you were the GM, who would you have signed/traded for? Please educate us.

So, they keep 12.00+ ERA J.D. Durbin and send Blackley packing. Anyone else keep track that as a reliever Blackley's ERA was 2.57?

I think Olmedo could have a shot as a backup infielder, but Helms and JD will be gone. Maybe once the Giants reclaim Blackley they can offer him back in a trade for Helms. Wouldn't that be funny, get a guy we just put on waivers back in a trade...lol. I'd welcome him back, I think he'd do more for this team then Helms but you never know.

Dull
Wonder if Seattle has any Gillick era pitchers left? Blackley could not throw strikes, Snelling struggles with the Mendoza line and Mike Garciapara was just given away to the O's and could not even make the Iron Pigs. Maybe that Seattle relief pitcher that had spousal abuse problems last year that Gillick picked up can be found again for the 12th spot in the pen?

Amazingly, a buddy of mine in Philly told me Eskin and I agree on Howard - no way he's in the same class as Pujols, Cabrera and A-Rod - and the Phils will hold onto him another 3,4(?) years until they have to let him go. Not that Mike Schmidt is any Ryan Howard. Still, he'll be 32, not exactly petite, can't field, can't run, strikes out too much. Now if we can just convince Bill Conlin...
