The Phillies activated catcher Carlos Ruiz from the disabled list and placed third baseman Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation.

Ruiz had plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He last played Aug. 2.

This season he is batting .335 with 14 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Ruiz has 353 plate appearances and needs 502 to qualify for the batting title. Yet he won’t come close to that total with 25 games left. That’s because the Phillies will gradually work him in the lineup.

“We will pinch hit him and see how it goes after three to four days might start using him and might be able to put him in couple of innings late in the game and every four to five days start him,” manager Charlie Manuel said before tonight’s game.

Ruiz admitted that he came close to shutting things down for the season.

“Last week it was real close to maybe not coming back because I tried to run and still would feel it,” Ruiz said. “In Atlanta and Cincinnati I tried to run real hard and I did not feel anything and that was big and I was so happy.”

Polanco said he doesn’t think he will play the rest of the season.

As for tonight, Ruiz is not in the lineup and neither is Ryan Howard, with Ty Wigginton starting at first base. Manuel said he felt Howard needed a rest and will be back in the lineup tomorrow.

Kevin Frandsen was in the original lineup, but was a late scratch due to left ankle soreness. He was replaced by Michael Martinez. Erik Kratz, who was originally batting eighth, has moved up to seventh.
