Game 108: Rollins Out Of Starting Lineup

POSTED: Sunday, August 5, 2012, 10:37 AM

Jimmy Rollins was written in the original lineup for the Phillies in today’s series finale with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but now Michael Martinez is playing shortstop.

Nate Schierholtz moves into Rollins accustomed leadoff spot.

Rollins said he was simply getting the day off.

The Phillies are 13-20 in starts made by Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee this year. The 13th win came in Halladay’s impressive outing in Saturday’s 3-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Halladay threw seven shutout innings limiting Arizona to three hits.

Now Lee (2-6, 3.73) will look to keep the momentum going against a Diamondbacks team that will send Trevor Cahill (9-9, 3.75) to the mound.

Here is the Phillies starting lineup for the series finale.

1. Nate Schierholtz, RF

2. Kevin Frandsen, 3B

3. Chase Utley, 2B

4. Ryan Howard, 1B

5. John Mayberry Jr., CF

6. Domonic Brown, LF

7. Erik Kratz, C

8. Michael Martinez, SS

9. Cliff Lee, P

In the last 5 games, JMJ is batting .316 with an .824 OPS. He's looking more relax, instead of wondering and looking over his shoulder. It seems he's in the middle of every rally over that stretch. BTW, he was safe at home twice and was called out both times.

In the meantime, Jimmy's BA has gone south to .246 and .305 OBP. Like I said when Murph tried to justify his contract comparing his numbers and salary to other SS about a month ago when the SS got hot for a while, it was an incomplete assessment. In the last 20 games (92 PA), Jimmy is batting .205 with a .283 OBP. But he got 4 HR during that stretch to go with a few dozen pop ups. Not hating, just staying whit my point since the winter when I said it was a mistake to sign the aging SS to that big contract. This is just the beginning.

victorino has been hitting leadoff every game since his trade to LA... he should have been handed the leadoff spot here years ago..

And he's batting a sizzling 167 (2 for 12) as leadoff! Pierre should be leadoff and he should of been leadoff all year. Plain and simple!

Rollins is a leadoff hitter who thinks and swings like he's a clean up hitter. Victorino suffered from the same disease. Both had the speed to be great lead off hitters if they were content to put the ball on the ground and leave the HR hitting to the middle of the order guys. Oh well...wasnt Uncle Buck that made them that way it was their contracts...or lack of motivation...or anything but the manager.

el zorro could not agree more with your comments on Rollins. He is the master at smoke and mirrors. He is the lazy, smart kid you knew in school who did just enough to get a C and pass. He is a cancer that should be gone. Demanding to bat first (selfish)and holding the manager and team hostage with the pouting if he is slid down the order.....SAD

Yeah, and he was NL MVP and gave the young Phils the swagger to believe in themselves when he said they were the team to beat. In addition, he took great pride in personally killing the NY Mutts after his team to beat declaration so that is a plus in my book. Clubhouse cancer? Please tell us where that info comes from so we can verify.

Look, he is an aging big time ball player who still has enough left in the tank for others to think he can still perform at his 2007 level of play. He is what he is. What he is is 1 of 2 of the greatest shortsops to ever play in the long history of this franchise. And in the end, when it is all said and written, that's going to be not too shabby!

I agree with everybody on Rollins. This is why Ruben needs to fire Charlie & hire Rhyno to manage the big club. He will have ZERO allegiance to anyone & will construct a lineup based on ACTUAL production not "earned the right to hit________" BS. (Chooch 4th Howard 5th Rollins 6th anyone?)

What exactly about Michael Martinez makes Charlie Manuel and Ruben Amaro think he should be on a major league roster? Can anyone make any sense of it?

Look, this team was the creation of one man. Pat Gillick came here in '06 and said it would take 3 years to win a title. In '08 he goes out and gets Lidge and Durbin (for $900,000), and the Phils win the WS. He made mistakes but the bottom line is a world championship.

In the process he builds a team with great spirit and great defense. Its a team thats the envy of MLB - everybody wants to play in Philly. Halladay takes less to come here. The word goes around about the team and the city.

'09 Rube takes over. In his 3 years the Phils become the highest spending team in the NL and fall to last place...

...and nobody wants to come here...
