Looks like they're ready to me.

The Phillies opened their Grapefruit League schedule today with an 8-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Lefthanders Jamie Moyer and Travis Blackley each threw three scoreless innings. Top prospect Carlos Carrasco impressed manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee in his one inning (Carrasco retired the side in order.)

Some of the Phillies' newcomers had a good day:

- Geoff Jenkins went 1 for 3 with a double.

- Eric Bruntlett went 2 for 2 with a double.

- Pedro Feliz went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI.

- So Taguchi went 1 for 2 with a RBI.

Greg Dobbs hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Looks like Dobbs picked up right where he left off with Spring Training last year.

Guess Feliz is living up to his rep. Hope the *newbies* keep it up!

Only preseason, but an expected outcome against the reds so it's a plus!

This is my 1st try at the new site. I'm still feeling a bit awkward, as though I'm not doing it right. It was good to see the Phils win even if it didn't mean anything. I heard Moyer looked good and the Phils beat on the Reds pitching. Here's hoping they make winning a habit and have a great April.

Travis Blackley is the guy the Phils got from the Giants. I think if he doesn't stick with the club he has to go back to the Giants. I hope he is a pleasant surprise and really helps the Phils.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
