Antonio Bastardo out with self-inflicted wound

POSTED: Friday, June 15, 2012, 11:02 PM

TORONTO — The left side of Antonio Bastardo's face looks as if he entered a boxing ring, but he merely stepped foot in the weight room Wednesday. It was after he allowed a run to Minnesota and he was not pleased with his effort.

He took his anger out on a squat machine, which returned the favor. He required stitches to close a large cut above his left eye, which was nearly swollen shut after Friday's game.

Bastardo insisted he could see out of the eye, and demonstrated by covering his right one and pretending to punch a reporter in the face. But he was not available to pitch Friday barring an emergency situation and could need a few more days to recover.

A large bandage covers the gash.

Need to start selling & fire Charlie! Amaro will show his true colors now that the farm system is bare and out of money. Players on this team have no trade value and the situation with Utley is getting so funny. I guess he doesn't like to play with pain .. only getting payed Millions. There are a lot of players that play when not in top health and I guess that is why they are call GAMERS. This team sucks along with those two anouncers Wheeler & Matthews. Been a Phillies fan for over 60 years but It's hard to root for this team because I just don't see the effort everyday. GO NATS!!!!

I didn't think it possible for Cliff Lee to go this long without a win. Before yesterday's game I thought it was a just incredible bad luck for him. But watching Jimmy Rollins throw a ball into right field and costing them the game, after watching player after player go hit-less against second rate pitching, I am beginning to think it possible that it it on purpose. Is there ill will towards Lee? I think back to the altercation with Victorino in the dugout of that one game. Is it possible that there are certain players purposely making sure Cliff doesn't get a win just to teach him some lesson? I never would of thought that until I saw Rollins throw to second in yesterday's game.

the continuing saga of stupid people do stupid things. The Phillies are a poster child for stupid players, ones that never learn new approaches i.e.Rollins, Victorino, Pence, etc, etc, etc.....

That was citizens BANK park in my prior post. The reason baseball has more injurie than any other sport is because the players (especially on THIS team) don't like working out, so they don't. Look a Mayberry's arms, I could break them over my knee, Ty Wiggins looks like porky pig when he stands up there to hit, I wish they would compile a film of all the "give up" running to first base by that lazy shortstop, Jimmy Rollins. If and error would take place, because he starts slowing down, they would still get him out. He's just plain lazy, but doesn't mind cashing that check. He's nothing but a has been. Hunter Pence gives up as many runs with bloopers in the outfield as he brings in at the plate. Really, is this guy A DEDICATED PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYER. The bullpen is frightening with out of shape pitchers like Chad (can't remember his last name). Then you have a bullpen pitcher to smashes his head against work out equipment. It's there to use, dummy, not to damage yourself. The announcers are still too kind to this pack of losers. Come on, Wheels, get drunk and come on and tell us how you really feel about this team that would have trouble beating a YMCA team of young boys........

Injuries schminjuries . . . tired of hearing it . . . the Nats have had their share (Werth(less) and Morse) to name just two. That's a lot of offense missing and they're in 1st place. They are not overloaded with over-aged, over-paid players well past their prime as are the Phyllis's. The Phyllis's suck because their GM went big on pitching. When the pitching didn't deliver their was/is no offense to keep up. Defensively they equally suck. They had to call Kim Batiste out of retirement to make those two throws - missing 2nd base by 20 feet - in two consecutive games.

If only people would stop filling the stadium with their hard earned money. I don't know the cost of a ticket and food at the game, but I bet for a family it's easily a C note. The ONLY way change will be effected is if the fans stop buying tickets. Empty out the place. Seriously, if you are contributing to this mess by giving the Phillies money to keep bankrolling this B.S. then YOU are a BIG part of the problem. Empty Citizen's band park in protest!!!!

Manuel ruined him. The guy is still young but Manuel treats him like he's a long reliever. Meanwhile Manuel coddles the $12 million a year reliever. I hope our next managers knows how to use a bullpen.

Love these poster who think MLB is like beer-league softball. Yeah, guys get hurt. Pitchers'arms aren't meant to continually throw 95 mph pitches. How many hockey players throw pucks? How many football players can shorthop a grounder and make a double play? Different sports, different uses of bodies and muscles.

So many injuries. Do these guys train at all during the off season? I have a feeling that the only thing they lift after October weighs 16 ounces. But, to be fair, I'm sure that do lots of reps. Actually, I liked them better when they were all on steroids.

I notice Shawnmac now inserts his comments after the first post on many articles (unrelated to what's posted), just so he can be on the front page. I'm sorry, but between his empty-headed comments in EVERY Phillies article and most Sixers and Eagles articles for two years, the constant whining, and now this, I wish this guy would just leave for a long, long time.

The old Philly jinx is back. Having watched this team since 1947, I have never seen so many injuries ,mishaps that have affected any team. Not even the Bosox. It is simply a horror and if anyone is left to play, they will look like Clearwater.

I hope the team "docks" these clowns for the time they can't pitch as a result of their self-inflicted injuries. The whole episode shows a lot of selfishness and immaturity.

Baseball is the only one of the four "major" sports that isn't a contact sport but they seem to have more injuries then rest of the sports combined.

I know it won't fix everything ... but it seems like the perfect time to bring up Cloyd. What else does he need to prove in AAA. Worley had less success than Cloyd when we gave him a shot. If he can pitch effectively it would allow Kendrick to go back to the pen ... which needs an experienced arm.
Go ahead and laugh, but I think it's a reasonable small step.
Unless they are already trying to trade him.

No biggie, bring some guys up from the minors and let them play until the regulars are healthy again. It is a long season and this team has come from way back to win the division before. I am sure everyone but the "Fairweather Fans" remember that, right?

Some pretty funny posts and the usual cries to fire Amaro and Manuel because marshmallow soft baseball players are getting hurt. Guess Toronto will fire their GM and manager because their pitchers are dropping like flies, including Drabek who many posters insisted the Phillies should not trade. Look around baseball; these players are not tough.

The only to Phillies real everyday players who are not walking wounded are Rollins and Pense. Polonco is playing injured. Victorino is playing injured. They have no first baseman, no catcher, have lost 2 second basemen and have one whole outfielder who is a major leaguer. More pitchers are injured than re playing. Maybe it is time to forfeit the rest of the season before they all get themselves killed!

Charlie was the perfect manager for the Phillies when all he had to do was write down the line up. Now, with choices to make, he needs to be replaced. Make Jim Thome, DH/PH/Hitting Coach.

FOR REAL NOW, WITH NO NEGATIVE INTENT, LET AT LEAST HOWARD TAKE THE REST OF THIS YEAR TO RECOVER FULLY AND COME BACK NEXT SEASON. THERE IS NO NEED TO RUSH HIM BACK TO THIS MASH UNIT OF A TEAM AND RISK A MAJOR "SETBACK" THAT COULD BE A LONG TERM PROBLEM FOR HIM. DEVOTE THE REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR TO FINDING OUT IF ANY OF THE TOP PROSPECTS CAN PLAY AT THE MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL.

The season is over, and there is now no need to bring Howard and Utley up o the majors. Let them extend their rehab over the shorter minor league season, and try to come back year at full throttle.

Are baseball players really this fragile compared to other professional sports? Baseball is a non-contact sport and they have more injuries than the other sports. I say baseball players are weak and fragile especially compared to hockey and football players.
