UPDATE (3:05 p.m.): The elbow injury that Phillies right-hander Jose Contreras suffered in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins, will likely end his season.

That was the grim prognosis given before Saturday’s game with the Marlins by Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

When asked if Contreras’ season is over, Amaro said, “Initially I would have to say so.”

According to Amaro, Contreras has a complete UCL tear and flexor pronator tear.

Contreras threw just five pitches to begin the seventh inning on Friday. On his fifth pitch to Omar Infante, he bent his arm and walked off the mound in noticeable pain.

The 40-year-old Contreras was limited to 17 games last year and eventually had elbow surgery on Sept. 2.

The Phillies will get a second opinion and send the MRI results to Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed Contreras’ surgery.

“We want to send him the information to get his thoughts, but unfortunately we are pretty confident that he has some serious issues,” Amaro said.

To nobody’s surprise, Phillies right-hander Jose Contreras has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.

Contreras hurt his elbow throwing his fifth pitch in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

To fill his spot, right-hander Michael Schwimer has been recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

After Friday’s game, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. had suggested that Contreras was likely headed to the DL.

Amaro said the team would try to get an MRI for Contreras as soon as possible.

The 40-year-old righthander had been pitching well, having not allowed a run in his previous six appearances prior to Friday.

Schwimer went 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in five games previously this season with the Phillies.
