Contreras likely out for the season

POSTED: Saturday, June 2, 2012, 12:03 PM

UPDATE (3:05 p.m.): The elbow injury that Phillies right-hander Jose Contreras suffered in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins, will likely end his season.

That was the grim prognosis given before Saturday’s game with the Marlins by Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

When asked if Contreras’ season is over, Amaro said, “Initially I would have to say so.”

According to Amaro, Contreras has a complete UCL tear and flexor pronator tear.

Contreras threw just five pitches to begin the seventh inning on Friday. On his fifth pitch to Omar Infante, he bent his arm and walked off the mound in noticeable pain.

The 40-year-old Contreras was limited to 17 games last year and eventually had elbow surgery on Sept. 2.

The Phillies will get a second opinion and send the MRI results to Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed Contreras’ surgery.

“We want to send him the information to get his thoughts, but unfortunately we are pretty confident that he has some serious issues,” Amaro said.

----

To nobody’s surprise, Phillies right-hander Jose Contreras has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain.

Contreras hurt his elbow throwing his fifth pitch in Friday’s 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins.

To fill his spot, right-hander Michael Schwimer has been recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

After Friday’s game, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. had suggested that Contreras was likely headed to the DL.

Amaro said the team would try to get an MRI for Contreras as soon as possible.

The 40-year-old righthander had been pitching well, having not allowed a run in his previous six appearances prior to Friday.

Schwimer went 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in five games previously this season with the Phillies.

I agree with the opinion that the Phils are an old team and thus prone to injuries. My problem is that this just didn't happen out of the blue and where are the prospects to revitalize the lineup? Dominic Brown does not look like a prospect anymore and there are no real hitters in the minors. Considering the injuries, Charlie is doing a remarkable job with this team.

Why don't they bring up Scott Elarton who had a good spring and is pitching well and has previous MLB experience. It took them 2 months to finally bring up Hector Luna after he had a good spring and he's made a postive contribution. I guess they are planning to sell off Elarton like they sold off Scott Posednik to the Red Sox.

I hope they do sell Elarton off to another team. He is one of the worst pitchers in MLB history.

What a shame for Contreras and for the Phillies. He was just finding his groove, and his upside is higher than any other option the team currently has. His pitching career is surely over... It reminds me of why those who say Utley is not retiring in order to collect his salary are wrong. When you play baseball your entire life, you don't want to give up until you absolutely, positively have to. Here's a guy, Contreras, who is (at least) 40. He undergoes surgery and months of rehab in order to keep playing, even though re-injury and/or ineffectiveness were great likelihoods, even though if healthy his career was still near its end. They just want to play, to compete. It's that drive which gets these people to the major leagues in the first place.

Somee of you posters are ridiculous. No fight, no loyalty to this team that has been so great to us the past 5 years. What team has no adversity over the course of a 5 year run? Go to the Eagles section. Its amazing how negative people can be.

Regarding the Schwimmer move: A large part of this is because he is on the 40 man roster, teams dont like to go outside of that if possibility because it creates a handful of chain events after the move such as removing a current player from the 40 man and risking him being claimed etc..Unless there is a no brainer option that is better the 40 man will always get the call.

My favorite is when TMac says a pitcher's night is done and the guy pitches the next inning. Never admits he's wrong, either, like a weatherman.

Tom McCarthy is an incompetent announcer. The mistake and flubs keep coming every game. Wheels is 66 years old and doesn't make the ton of mistakes that TMac at 43 does. And neither did Harry Kalas in his last years. Every game he has to correct himself after making a mistake. It's "what I meant to say" or "what I should have said" all the time! He actually said "Ty Wiggington steps on the bag for the FOURTH OUT" one time! Does this guy have Alzheimers or something.

McCarthy has been lobotomized by Wheeler and the station. He was actually tolerable early in his career here. As Harry left us, he and the insufferable boob Wheeler worked together more and more. Now, they're making inning-by-inning comments about specific people in the stands - who the hell cares? They are a couple of bloated nitwits that look like they have testosterone deficiency.

Makes you long for the days of the reliable Chad Durbin and Clay Condrey. Never understood why they were let go. I guess to save money for the big contracts they handed out later on.

Anyone who counted on Contreras for ANYTHING this season needs their head examined. Older than God and coming off elbow surgery. Gotta love the morons who want to trade everyone on the team because Contreras goes down; grow up!

Whatever reasons they have for calling him up, Schwimmer is just awful. He doesn't even get the job done in the minors. He actually makes me miss Herndon and his 3 year strong .300 plus batting average against. at least when Herndon is getting bombed we get to see him walking off with his arrogant smirk as Charlie is finally and mercifully taking him out of the game. I miss that.

Sad for him but no surprise given his age and history. It's a shame Manuel destroys young pitchers by leaving them in games too long and ignores matchups. Yet the veterans who have no future and no upside sit because he doesn't want to risk being criticized for using them. Schwimmer, Stutes, Bastardo and soon Diekman have all been ruined because he doesn't know how to use relievers.
