Phillies Make Several Moves
Marc Narducci
As expected, the Phillies have made several moves prior to tonight’s game at Citizens Bank Park against the San Diego Padres.
Outfielder-first baseman Laynce Nix was placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 10) with a left calf strain.
Righthander Justin DeFratus was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Righthander Brian Sanches was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Lefthander Jake Diekman was recalled from Lehigh Valley.
In addition, lefthander Raul Valdes and infielder Hector Luna had their contracts selected from Lehigh Valley.
The series of moves began on Wednesday evening when the Phillies optioned lefthander Joe Savery to Lehigh Valley.
The public was tipped off to many of these moves by recently demoted reliever Michael Schwimer, who Thursday tweeted “congrats to Diekman, Valdes and Luna for being called up.”

After being swept in three games by the New York Mets, the Phillies will now entertain the team with the National League’s worst record: the Padres (11-21).
The Phillies (14-18) split a four-game series last month in San Diego.
Here is tonight's lineup:
1. Jimmy Rollins, SS
2. Placido Polanco, 3B
3. Shane Victorino, CF
4. Hunter Pence, RF
5. Ty Wigginton, 1B
6. Carlos Ruiz, C
7. John Mayberry, Jr., LF
8. Freddy Galvis, 2B
9. Vance Worley, P
They should bring up someone to replace Kyle Kendrick! skolman
Let's look at what Luna did the last time he was in the major leagues with the Marlins in 2010. He hit .138 in 27 games. The Phillies makes this the fifth major league team this guy has played for in his career. Why is it no player under thirty years old is given a chance to be called up by this godforsaken team? Dull- I can see you're not a Lunatic.

Dull, were you a Kevin Stocker fan ?? NewMick314
Wouldn't Fontenot be a better call-up than Luna? At least Fontenot has shown some ability during his major league career, unlike Luna. bdm155
Huh, I was hoping that the Phils would have traded for a decent bullpen arm or two.
Why was Brian Sanches optioned outright? He should be cut. Bruno Sammartino
Sensation of movement...downward ho. DameB

Not much else they can do at this point, doesn't make much sense to go after a contract at this point. Kendrick and Contreras both have solid contracts so you can't just push them aside yet.
Crazy idea, Chase Utley LH pinch hitter off the bench. Don't know if he can do it but he is taking batting practice. Might be possible as he rehabs the fielding end of his game. tony bell
Brandon Inge was released by the Tigers a while back, I was hoping we'd take a run at him, it would cost us almost nothing. You move Polanco back to 2B and put Inge at 3rd and you have a decent hitting infield. Inge ended up signing with Oakland and has 2 grandslams this year.
I think we are starting to see some panic with management as it becomes apparent that the Phillies are no longer the class of the division.
Even if Chase and Ryan come back, there's no sign they're going to make a difference. All of the issues that have existed with this team for years, are now being shown in the brightlight because they can't cover them up anymore. Phils haven't moved runners over ever under Manuel, that's his legacy. They are a bunch of free swinging hackers with no plate discipline at all, and every team in the league knows it. They are not fundamentally sound, neither at bad or in the field, they routinely give away at-bats, and give teams more outs than they are entitled to.
I think one of the 1st orders of business should be firing this oaf they call a manager. Anyone who thinks that Jimmy Rollins is an adequate leadoff hitter, is not deserving of a managerial job in the majors. Especially when Juan Pierre is on the same roster. BosoxJohnny- Amen. I thought the Phils should have gone after Inge right after Detroit released him. Polanco could have easily gone back to 2nd, Inge at 3rd. Easily an offensive upgrade to the struggling Galvis (who still needs some AAA seasoning). Instead, the Chase tic/toc continues with NO TIMETABLE to head to clearwater on the horizon. Really? If not, stop "hangin" in the dugout. You are doing nothing but teasing the Phans about your rehab. And how bout an update on the big piece in Clearwater? Gotta love this drastic fall from grace...no offense...bullpen offensive.

Welcome to the world of Ruben Amaro Jr's Phillies. They call three guys up from the farm. An injection of youth? Nah. Average age of Luna, Valdes, and Diekman is 30.3. That's pretty old! But it still brings the average age of the Phillies down. Nix, Qualls, and Sanches average 32.3. RAJ's secret plan is to develop some type of thirtysomething age related sociological chemistry among his charges. I guess he feels having guys in their 20s and 30s would cause a rift. jtj10
@BosoxJohnny, Polanco Doesn't have to range of movement to play 2nd anymore. There is a lot more ground to cover when you have to be the cut off man and cover when people steal. That being said I still think Inge could help this team. Thrillhouse40
Well in terms of their place in the division, these moves are guaranteed not to make them any worse. TongueWagger
Yes, Inge. Let's bring in another cooked, over-the-hill infielder, that's just what we need seaonasdad
