Thome, Ruiz, Quick Updates
Marc Narducci
Jim Thome said there’s not much new to report on his back. Thome was replaced in the fifth inning of Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs due to back tightness.
“It’s no worse and about the same as yesterday,” Thome said before today’s game with the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park.
When asked if he would be available today to pinch hit, Thome wasn’t sure. He said he planned to see a doctor before the game.
Carlos Ruiz isn’t in the starting lineup, but as he walked through the locker room he said he was feeling fine. Ruiz took a foul ball off his knee on Saturday in the sixth inning, but played the rest of the game and hit a home run in the sixth inning.
So, in other words, Thome is old and Ruiz gets knicked like all catchers. Yawn. BirdinParadise
I'm a big fan, but is it time to end the Thome experiment? benjyedwards
The doctor said take two aspirin and retire in the morning. dasher- that is funny.

Great, the one hitter that is playing at a high level, and like he gives a hoot, is Ruiz.....let's take his bat out of the lineup. rockinrob
in addition to the pathetic offense and fairly awful pitching after the starters and end of bullpen (Kendrick proves again that he is not a major league pitcher and it's amazing the numbers of morons commenting on this site who still think he was worth $7.5 million), what has been somewhat ovelooked is how awful so many of the players are at defense -- once a staple of good Phillies teams -- Schneider can't throw or block the plate (or hit, and it's bewildering why he is on a major leaguue roster), and Pence can't catch, Pierre can't throw and they have to be added to Wigginton, Nix & Thome as below avg to useless defenders warbiscuit- Hmmm. I must be one of the moron's, but justacarpenter, who only posts to stalk this commenter, has already called me that.
WarB, I simply cannot fathom what your point is. Ad hominem attacks, constant continual posting of the same stuff, regardless of its merit, does not add to the discourse.
We understand you are unhappy. We understand you don't like RAJ, Manuel, et al. We understand that you think that 50% (or more) of this lineup and roster is overpaid, over the hill, and to quote a late announcer: should be 'outtahere'. WE UNDERSTAND ALL OF THAT. What are your alternatives? What are your solutions? What would you substitute for Kendrick, Rollins, Nix, Pierre, Wigginton, Polanco, Qualls, Herndon, etc? Some 'morons' here have pointed out the stats, WAR, etc. of the contributors, which you continually discount. Some of the 'morons' have offered alternatives to the lineup, which you continually ignore and do not have comments on. Some of the 'morons' have, while partially agreeing with your analysis, have offered the tested argument of time, which you have also either ignored, or used personal comments to attack.
What is moronic is to stare at your screen, keyboard in hand, warring on other posters who don't agree with you. This is justacarpenters argument thrown at me, and other posters, last week.
Well, the argument has come home to roost right at the foxhole of the worst offender.
Yours truly,
One of the Morons 24sDad

How pathetic has this become. Now Mccarthy and Wheeler have spent two innings talking about the ball that Schneider "squared up and almost hit a home run on". The rightfielder caught the ball 4o feet from the warning track. I guess I can't blame them though...there's not really anything else to talk about...except maybe the rally they "almost" had in the first inning when they had a baserunner. It's come to this. kokie
It is time to say goodbye to Thome. He can't play the field, can't pinch hit and now he can't stay healthy. That trio spells pink slip.

is there a 240 day DL for Thome? coloradoeagle
Signing Thome was the same type of gamble as signing Roy Oswalt. Both men had a history of back injuries and limited playing time. As much as I like Thome as a super person as a baseball player, I thought that he wouldn't help the Phillies when he was signed. In the overall scheme of things, I would hope that Amaro had already factored in the possibility that Thome might not stay healthy when Amaro signed him. Perseus317
