Thome Leaves Game With Lower Back Tightness

POSTED: Saturday, April 28, 2012, 8:31 PM

Jim Thome, who got the start at first base for the Phillies, left Saturday's 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs with lower back tightness.

He was replaced in the top of the fifth inning by Ty Wigginton, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh.

Thome is listed as day to day.

Manager Charlie Manuel said after the game that Thome hurt his back while sliding into second base on Shane Victorino's fielder's choice.

This was Thome’s fourth start of the season. He was 0-for-1 in the game with one walk and is now 2-for-18 on the season.

Charlie strikes again! Playing Thome on a night like this was inane.
But he doesn't play him on Opening Day--a beautiful day with the wind blowing out to right at 35 mph

I too think Thome is a great guy and a class act; but his spot on the team should be filled with someone who can hit and play the field. Find another spot in the organization for him.

Relax folks. Let's give this a chance. I saw Thome down at Spring Training and he was roping the ball, even on outs. In fact, he looked to be hitting the best of any of the players I saw (unlike say Polanco). Let's see how things go when it starts to warm up a bit more.

Kratz had a knack for pinch hitter in spring training games. Something like 5 for 7 with a pinch homer. But that makes too much sense to bring him up.

Just a guess, but I think Thome will voluntarily hang 'em up and save the embarrassment to Charlie, himself, and the team.
    He's a class act !

The only way the Phillies will improve is to replace Manuel and Amaro and get people who can handle change from Senior Citizenball playere to a younger team.
