Thome Leaves Game With Lower Back Tightness
Marc Narducci
Jim Thome, who got the start at first base for the Phillies, left Saturday's 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs with lower back tightness.
He was replaced in the top of the fifth inning by Ty Wigginton, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the seventh.
Thome is listed as day to day.
Manager Charlie Manuel said after the game that Thome hurt his back while sliding into second base on Shane Victorino's fielder's choice.
This was Thome’s fourth start of the season. He was 0-for-1 in the game with one walk and is now 2-for-18 on the season.

The only way the Phillies will improve is to replace Manuel and Amaro and get people who can handle change from Senior Citizenball playere to a younger team. tulsaphil
Just a guess, but I think Thome will voluntarily hang 'em up and save the embarrassment to Charlie, himself, and the team.
He's a class act !

Kratz had a knack for pinch hitter in spring training games. Something like 5 for 7 with a pinch homer. But that makes too much sense to bring him up. Dull
Overbeck,,,,,,,,,,,call from RAJ on line 3 NewMick314
Relax folks. Let's give this a chance. I saw Thome down at Spring Training and he was roping the ball, even on outs. In fact, he looked to be hitting the best of any of the players I saw (unlike say Polanco). Let's see how things go when it starts to warm up a bit more. Chicago_Phils_Fan
I too think Thome is a great guy and a class act; but his spot on the team should be filled with someone who can hit and play the field. Find another spot in the organization for him. Foundry Guy

Charlie strikes again! Playing Thome on a night like this was inane.
But he doesn't play him on Opening Day--a beautiful day with the wind blowing out to right at 35 mph VicM
Love Thome, but at this point in his career he's toast. Time to retire and let younger players like Overbeck or Kratz move up. Dragon13
Fire G.G. and have Thome stay on as a player/coach. In his heyday, the big guy could really hit. He has the personality of someone who would make a great manager someday. Repubrebirth
Jim Thome has more class in his little finger then all of you have combined. Now go F. O. like good little boys livin' in mamma's basement. Tozmanian
a major mistake by Reuben and Charlie....Freindship is great but he can no longer play...this is a blessing in disguise, Now they can cut him, say good bye and save face... nuggett
Agree with the comments above. Jim needs a long stay on the DL, and lets bring somebody up that maybe can add some pop to the lineup. blaqjaq
Tough one Jim. I was in favor of the signing but only if he could play first base a couple of times a week. His PH numbers were weak. Don't know what we're gonna do now. That $1.1 mil , or better put, 0.6% of the payroll is a tremendous financial investment, and certainly one that they won't be able to overcome. Put a for in em. zubzub
I see this as a "major" chronic back issue that will require a stint on the 60 day DL. For all parties involved, please bow out gracefully Jim. Stay on the DL, travel with the team, lend your expertise and advise, but realize you finally have outlived your ability to hit the ball effectively. Love ya man, but please, for the good of the team, time to hang em up. drhoffman
Playing Jim on a cold and damp night wasn't such a great idea. AvoidSundanceVacations
shocking --senior citizen with back issues for years has a back issue --betya Clueles rube never even considered this could happen (meanwhile 99% of all Phils fans are thinking please Jim go on d.l. for a real long time, enjoy your $1.1 mil. parting gift that rube gave you, start preparing your Hall of Fame speech and of course say somethign nice about Forrest Gump Manuel, but let Phils fill your
roster spot with someone who might be able to field or hit at least sometimes (maybe rube will find out what his favorite, Bruntlett, has been up to)) warbiscuit
maybe he ll consider on retiring and that would benefit the team ,,nice fella but time to hang your cleats hardball
mr thome please take a bow tip the hat...and leave.....

With Nix and Wigginton I would rather see Pods on the bench. Given he can't really play 1b anymore I was surprised at the signing. lazyboy

Might be best to put him on the DL for a bit, let him play some rehab games as a DH, and see if his bat can get going before the weather gets warmer. Llamaboy1375
I love the big guy but jeez...Anyone suprised?? outta work
