Polanco gets good news on injured finger
Bob Brookover, Inquirer Baseball Columnist
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Third baseman Placido Polanco said X-rays of his left ring finger taken after he left Saturday's game against Toronto were negative and categorized himself as day to day.
"It's a little stiff today and a little swelling," Polanco said Sunday morning. "I jammed it and it's day to day. I just have to see how I feel every day."
Assistant general manager Scott Proefrock described the injury as "a little sprain" and said Polanco would miss only a couple of days.
Polanco, besieged by a variety of injuries since rejoining the Phillies in 2010, was relieved that his finger was not fractured. He sustained the injury diving back into first base on a pickoff throw by the Toronto catcher in the bottom of the first inning Saturday and feared it could have been something bad.
"When I slid, I saw it and I popped it back in because it was sticking up," Polanco said. "It didn't look good."
Off to Dunedin
The Phillies make the shortest of all road trips Sunday, traveling to nearby Dunedin for another game against the Blue Jays. Cole Hamels gets the start and Jose Contreras is scheduled to make his first appearance in a Grapefruit League game after pitching twice in minor-league games. Chad Qualls, Antonio Bastardo and David Herndon also are scheduled to pitch for the Phillies.
Jim Thome will remain in Clearwater and play a second straight minor-league game at first base.
The lineup: Jimmy Rollins, SS, Shane Victorino, CF, Hunter Pence, RF, Ty Wigginton, 3B, John Mayberry Jr., 1B, Luis Montanez, LF, Hector Luna, DH, Erik Kratz, C, Michael Martinez, 2B.
Good news for now, I suppose..... Polanco, a very good player for a long time, seems he is capable of going on the DL with one swing of the bat, one stoop for a ground ball or one awkward reach for the Irish Spring soap bar in the shower! This spring training has become the Theater of the Absurd! DelawareRiverRat
the cluless g.m., with no prior experience or success, was handed a WS championship team (and 2-time defending NLEast champ) with a great minor league system, and traded away a dozen of its best prospects in efforts just to retain its ability to win its division, while neglecting offense, bench and bullpen, and made numerous awful long-term way-above-market contracts with deteriorating veterans, and with such flawed teams fell short every post-season, culminating now in an injured over-the-hill team with a bleak future... he is simply incompetent and destroyed what could have been a terrific run (but all Phils got from Amaro was a t-shirt saying NL East Division champs 2009-2011) warbiscuit
and of course the ignonimony of watching 74-yr old Pedro pitch to Hideki Mitsui in 2009 warbiscuit
Warbiscuit = Equine for "lonewolf" andrewfrombrooklyn
this team is too old and prone to more injuries,,too late for changes and got to stick with what they have in that arrp lineup hardball
Every spring it's an injury that's nothing, then come October we're still dealing with it. joedavola
It's this year or bust - this team should look a lot different next year; between aging veterans, expiring contracts, and up-and-coming prospects, we need to get a lot younger. And, we NEVER should have traded Wilson Valdez! guitarman
STOP WHINING!!!
We will be O.k. It may take some time but, our pitching should carry us.
Once Utley returns....!
Howard should not be counted on for most of the year. Edae
So now a slide into 1st base is an injury that can only happen to someone in their 30's. Granted PP has had injuries, Getting hit in the elbow is not an age related injury and that knocked him down in 2010 when he was hitting over 300.. A little over reaction on our gg 3rd baseman who according to the #'S compiled in volume 3 of the defense bible PP saved more runs with his glove then anyone on our team. He may be older but he still has value and knocking him because of a finger injury is stupid. Maybe he won't last the season but maybe he will. Speculation and more speculation. pattymac3
Who said we need to get younger and in the same breath we should never have traded Valdez?. I prefer giving a 22 year old who has an upside over a 33 or 34 year old journeyman/ If we have to worry about losing a utility guy we are in big trouble and Valdez won't make a bit of difference pattymac3
Pattymac3.The whole damn team is 34 OR older.Valdez was a good insurence policy way better than Nix or Thome. They would be in trouble with Valdez but not quite as bad. This team is toast. tobyjoe
Starting to think Polanco is made of balsa wood. Dragon13
The Phils have 16 players above the age of 30 on the 25 man roster:
Joe Blanton 31
Jose Contreras 40
Roy Halladay 34
Cliff Lee 33
Jonathan Papelbon 31
Chad Qualls 33
Carlos Ruiz 33
Brian Schneider 35
Ryan Howard 32
Placido Polanco 36
Jimmy Rollins 33
Jim Thome 41
Chase Utley 33
Ty Wigginton 34
Laynce Nix 31
Shane Victorino 31
That's 64% of the roster. Only the Diamonbacks and Yankees have an average team age older than the Phils (28.9). Just some facts and figures to chew on.

Tex, I gave up on the chewing. Old beef is too tough. NewMick314
