Who deserves to be the next Phillie honored on the team's Wall of Fame?
Larry Christenson, RHP
Jim Konstanty, RHP
Ron Reed, RHP
Curt Schilling, RHP
Rick Wise, RHP
Mike Lieberthal, C
Jimmy Wilson, C
Pinky Whitney, 3B
Greg Gross, OF
Von Hayes, OF
Mike Ryan, coach
Jim Fregosi, manager

The Phillies revealed the 12-man ballot for this year's Wall of Fame voting and, once again, Curt Schilling has to be considered the favorite.

That, of course, did not matter in 2011 when John Kruk was enshrined. The team opens voting to fans online and the choices are whittled to five for the team-picked committee to decide on the inductee.

Here is the full ballot:

Larry Christenson, RHP
Jim Konstanty, RHP
Ron Reed, RHP
Curt Schilling, RHP
Rick Wise, RHP
Mike Lieberthal, C
Jimmy Wilson, C
Pinky Whitney, 3B
Greg Gross, OF
Von Hayes, OF
Mike Ryan, coach
Jim Fregosi, manager

Interestingly enough, Lenny Dykstra's name is missing from the ballot despite his inclusion last season. This isn't the Hall of Fame, so the Phillies run the show. They, apparently, have invoked the morality clause. Dykstra, among other legal issues, is awaiting sentencing on multiple counts of grand theft auto. It's been postponed to March.

So replacing Kruk and Dykstra are Whitney and Ryan.

There really shouldn't be a challenger to Schilling. Already, two members from the 1993 Phillies — Darren Daulton and Kruk — have been inducted before Schilling.

Schilling ranks at the top in many of the franchise's major pitching categories. He's sixth in wins (101), eighth in innings pitched (1,659 1/3), fourth in strikeouts (1,554), fifth in WHIP (1.12), second in K/9 (8.4), sixth in games started (226), first in K:BB ratio (3.75) and fifth in bWAR (34.6). He still holds the single-season record for strikeouts, 319 in 1997.

Obviously, he has a complicated legacy in Philadelphia cemented once he demanded out of the city and won three World Series with Arizona and Boston. That shouldn't take away from his accomplishments over nine seasons with the Phillies.

In his only postseason with the Phillies, he started four games. The Phillies won three, including his masterful shutout in Game 5 of the 1993 World Series, and he posted a postseason ERA of 2.59.

After this season and Schilling's assumed induction, the Wall options are bleak. Pat Burrell won't be eligible until 2015 for enshrinement. Bank on that.

And there are plenty of future inductees on the current Phillies. But none are retiring any time soon.

Any ideas?

The crime is their ballot forces you to choose three, and won't let you pick Shilling 3x. Keep this up and it will be the Wall of Everyone who's played for the Phillies for more than 2 years.

There are really only 2 obvious choices on the ballot...Schilling and Konstanty whose contributions to the 1950 team continue to be overlooked.

For this particular group, the only obvious choice would be 'None'. Sadly, we don't have that option.

Does anyone on this list other than Schilling even deserve consideration? If the Phillies have to go a couple of years without putting someone in their wall of fame, then so be it.

Shilling should never be on that wall. He lost that privileg when he begged and cried to leave Philly and forced the Phil's hand in one of the worst trades in the history of the club. Travis Lee my eye.... Much rather see Greg Gross, Jim Konstanty, or Ron Reed up there...

Thank goodness someone else remembers the 'forced' trade. If you force you way out of town, stay off the wall too. Whats next, Scott Rolen ends up next season's ballot? Curt was good for Philly, but when things weren't great, he was like the Captain on that Carnival Cruise ship...1st one off the boat.

Thank you topwonk. That scumbag Schilling should never even mentioned in the same name as the Phillies. If he's elected to the Wall, it will disgrace the people who actually should be on there. Kostanty is the only obvious choice here.

Schilling begged his way out, but who could blame him. The franchise was in the toilet and he was throwing 9 innings a night. I don't like him. Don't think of him as a Philly. But he was good.

Why isn't Rudi Meoli on the ballot?

Agree, Matt... Shill's stats are hard to ignore, which is why I voted for him. He may have been a supreme PIA in some eyes, but his contributions to the team are clear.

Curt Schilling was integral to the '93 club winning the pennant, and was he just phenomenal in the late '90s. Of course he's a jerk - but this is not for public office. I loved watching him pitch, and I appreciate all of his accomplishments while wearing the red pinstripes. Vote Curt!

Greg Gross or Mike Ryan. Who wouldn't pay to see those guys get enshrined on the wall. Why don't they induct the Phanatic?

The Phanatic was originally portrayed by David Raymond, who worked as an intern in the team's front office and for fifteen years, from 1978 to 1993, he was the Phanatic's "Special Friend". He didn't design him but his imagination and talent pioneered the Phanatic persona. If Mr. Raymond is not already honored on the wall, he certainly should be.

Anyone who ask out of the city/team should never be on the wall, PERIOD....who's next Rolen, JD Drew???? Sounds more like battery targets than wall of famers :) Libby should get some consideration for being one of the longest tenued philly athletes for all of Philadelphia not just the Phillies. Dystrka should still be on the wall, I don't care what he's been up to lately, he was the biggest star of the greatest Phillies team ever. Can't represent '93 without NAILS!

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
