Apparently, the Phillies have not ruled out placing Joe Blanton on the 25-man postseason roster. It seems to be the only reason they started the righthander Saturday night in the second game of a day/night doubleheader against the Mets.

Blanton said he has no idea if he’ll be on the postseason roster, but that he felt good throwing 24 pitches in his two shutout innings of work. “I thought it went pretty good,” said Blanton, who had missed most of the season with elbow inflammation. “The real test is the day after and I haven’t done anything yet.”

Blanton struck out three and his fastball reached 92 miles an hour. The 24 pitches were the most he’s thrown since May 14, the last game he started before he went on the disabled list. He’s had four appearances since he was activated Sept. 12. He’s allowed one run in five innings. Blanton’s hopes of making the 25-man postseason roster seems to hinge on whether or not the Phillies carry 10 or 11 pitchers.
