Remembering Harry Kalas. . .

Monday, April 13, 2009, 2:08 PM
I'll start. Feel free to chime in. There was a station that broadcasts out of Scranton -- probably still does -- called 590-WARM. Growing up, it was my only link to Major League Baseball. The Poconos are a vast place, far less populus than they are today, and we lived about six miles in either direction... Read more

On your list of Philadelphia folk heroes, where does Matt Stairs rank?

Monday, April 13, 2009, 8:52 AM
A few quick things. Quick, because I am sitting on a runway in Denver -- well, not actually on the runway, I'm sitting in a plan that is sitting on the runway -- and my battery power is running out on my laptop. We touch down around 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time, so I'll try to expound sometime thereafter... Read more

Park out after 3 1/3, Phillies starters continue to struggle

Sunday, April 12, 2009, 5:11 PM
From this vantage point, it just looked like Chan Ho Park couldn't find the strike zone with any consistency. He threw 48 pitches in the first inning, twice allowing hitters to battle back from an 0-2 hole and force a full count that resulted in RBI hits. His final line: 3 1/3 innings, five runs,... Is it still a sunrise service if there is no sunrise?

Sunday, April 12, 2009, 1:59 PM
Not a pretty day thus far here in Denver. It is 11:52 a.m. Mountain Standard Time and the sun has yet to show its face. The sky is gray. The tarp is on the field. The forecast calls for 60 percent chance of rain. Batting practice is being held inside the cage. The temperature isn't expected to rise... Read more

Marson will be in Denver tomorrow

Friday, April 10, 2009, 8:10 PM
Lou Marson is on his way to Denver. For now, the move is only a precaution in case injured catcher Carlos Ruiz, who left the Phillies 10-3 loss to the Rockies yesterday with a strained oblique, is unable to play. Marson, a September call-up last season who went 2-for-4 with a home run in his only... Read more

Ruiz out with right oblique strain; Hamels out after 3 2/3

Friday, April 10, 2009, 5:39 PM
Just received an update here in the press box: Catcher Carlos Ruiz is out of the game with a right oblique strain. There is no word on how he suffered it. Chris Coste pinch-hit for Ruiz in the top of the seventh and has remained in the game. We'll know more later. . . ^ Cole Hamels struggled today... Read more

First look at the World Series rings

Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 3:56 PM
Here are the rings the Phillies received before today's game: From the Phillies: Each 14 karat white gold ring contains 103 diamonds, totaling 3.84 karats. The 103 diamonds represent the 92 regular season and 11 postseason wins for the Phillies in 2008. The top of the ring is crowned with a ruby inlay... Read more

Morning odds and ends: White House, bullpen and RISP

Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 11:13 AM
Some odds and ends: 1) The Phillies will visit the White House on Tuesday, which is an off day following a day game in Washington, D.C. against the Nationals. As of this morning, the club was still working on logisitcs of the trip. 2) This is the fourth straight year in a row the Phillies have dropped... Read more

Werth batting fifth

Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 4:27 PM
The line-up has been posted, and there is an alteration. Instead of batting his three lefties in a row, Charlie Manuel is breaking them up with righthander Jayson Werth in the five-hole. - Jimmy Rollins SS - Shane Victorino CF - Chase Utley 2B - Ryan Howard 1B - Jayson Werth... Read more

Morning run-down: Past champs, Putzrod, and Tonight's Game

Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 8:23 AM
I was bored this morning, so I thought I'd look back at how some recent World Series champions started off their following seasons. This data obviously doesn't suggest anything as far as the Phillies go, particularly since I used random records at arbitrary points during each team's first 10 games... Read more
