Game 24 (15-8): More on Oswalt; Mayberry in line-up

Updated: 12:02 p.m.

The Phillies just released a statement about Roy Oswalt, saying he has left the team to deal with some issues involving the massive system of storms that moved through his home state of Mississippi.

Ruben Amaro Jr.:

“There has been a tremendous amount of tornado activity near Roy’s home in Mississippi resulting in several tragic deaths and significant devastation to the area.  Because of this, Roy is concerned about his family’s well-being.  He has chosen to take time to make sure there wasn’t significant damage to his home, but more importantly, to make certain that his wife and children are okay.

It is almost a year to the day that his parents’ home was destroyed by a tornado which has heightened his concern about the current situation.

We are hopeful that he will rejoin the team for his next start, but will take that day by day.”

Just to clear up my earlier post, I was never suggesting that the Phillies are obligated to detail the reason Oswalt left the team. I was just suggesting that they provide some official idea of a timetable for his return to limit some of the rampant speculation that always occurs when something like this happens. They did that, so I took the earlier post down.

John Mayberry Jr. is in the line-up against lefty Joe Saunders. Struggling Raul Ibanez gets the day off:

  1. Shane Victorino CF
  2. Placido Polanco 3B
  3. Jimmy Rollins SS
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Ben Francisco RF
  6. John Mayberry Jr. LF
  7. Carlos Ruiz C
  8. Wilson Valdez 2B
  9. Cole Hamels LHP

"peons on the outside" - you're a schmuck. How's that for coherent communication? Do some investigating before reporting. Maybe into Oswalt's hometown and the severe weather ripping through Mississippi in the last 48 hours.

Purely speculative but we should all keep Roy in our prayers if his property was damaged or his family was harmed. Can't blame him for his performance last night if he had personal issues and if he had his mind on his home town, family, house, etc.

Ah lawsuit, Murphy has always acted like he's bigger than life. I think he said that paraphrasing what the Phillies actually think of all you front running fans who flood the ballpark every night and don't even know who Mike Schmidt was.

Good explanation, that was exactly how I took the exchange - not worried but wishing a clear PR statement for once wouldn't lead to a ridiculous cascade of Chicken Little commenting. Knowing several people who have been impacted by the southern storms myself (and I am sure I don't know as nearly as many southerners as Roy) I think that has to be the most likely explanation. We'll certainly not hear it (or anything) from Oswalt since he has the prototypical southern lockjaw when talking about his own problems or issues he is facing in a public forum.

Todd Zolecki and David Murphy do a great job, but the Phillies don't owe them or us any more information than they want to give out. Reporters are paid to dig, and I appreciate the digging Todd and David do, but let's not act like the Phils are violating some mythical "right to know" laws by playing things close to the vest.

Why is Ibanez getting only 1 day off? He is not hitting right handers either, but if you pay him , you need to play him!!

hey I have no problem with it, what's personal should remain personal. Id like to ask these reporters some questions about their lives, see how open they are..

David- you have a lot to learn about mgmt and communications regarding a private matter. Take it at face value and move on.

How about moving the family to a more secure area if they go through this often, if that's the real problem. I know I would. It's not like money is an issue.
